it's getting a bit excessive.. instead of making a new thread for every update and cluttering. i'm rolling all october updates into this one. here's everything that changed in october, newest first:

reaction improvements + stability fixes

reactions now can be the entire emote/emoji library and apply just like discord reactions.
likes have been changed to the heart react - this is reversible if people don't like it.
i have gone through log files and found and resolved a couple of errors that showed in really niche situations.
performance upgrades

performance improvements have been made to both the backend and frontend, stuff should load a bit quicker now. this is probably the most noticeable in the random thoughts thread.
manga tracking, manga category and light theme

manga tracking
like the anime tracking, only for manga. it functions p much exactly the same way, you can add manga to lists and have them display on your profile, or start threads and link them to a manga page.
it uses myanimelist data, and myanimelist doesn't publish detailed chapter info so it can't really be split into episodes like the anime pages.
the syncs that have been set up for anime now also sync manga.
manga category
manga has been split into its own category again. threads have been moved and linked to the manga tracker pages, please let me know if there are any mistakes.
light theme
there's a light theme again, you can change to it under settings.
image upload, emoji picker and old content fixes

image upload
you can now upload images directly in the text editor (hosted with a third party service). drag and drop, paste from clipboard, and clicking the image button all work.
emoji picker
the emoji picker has been expanded to include twitch emotes and more emoji.
old content fixes
this one's less visible, but old posts have been cleaned up of any garbled text, unsupported bbcode (replaced with new alternatives) or other formatting issues.
anime tracking, desktop notifications, misc

anime tracking
there's a new anime section (powered by myanimelist). with it you can track anime (or sync it from another service: MAL, kitsu or anilist), or start discussions that are linked to an anime or individual episodes.
desktop notifications
you can now set up desktop notifications under settings, these can be turned on for either new DMs or new notifications.
misc
there's a few background changes that are less noticeable:
- the site will now detect when you're on an older version of the CSS or JS and refresh accordingly
- the categories page now has some styling, it was a mess before
- some seo stuff
- some server settings changed so that assets load quicker
chat & threadlist redesign

live chat
DMs have been reworked into a live chat in the bottom right corner of your screen.
we had something similar aaaages ago back on MyBB, and i loved being able to instantly welcome new members and start chatting. not really sure why i removed it tbh.
thread list
the thread list has also been redesigned, it now shows an avatar for the person that last replied instead of whoever posted the thread.

changes to backend

the lewd backend has been changed to another software. basically it should be faster, have better realtime integration and be more motivating for me to work on!
it should look close to the same except for a few features:
- live viewing and typing indicators on the thread list and thread pages
- topics can be set to have a condensed chat style layout instead of a standard forum layout (intended for really large general discussion threads)
- interaction reminders for general topics
