  • What game are you playing? Thread

Ahh~, I really hope the electronics guys get my gaming PC back to me soon! I was playing a settlement in RimWorld with pawns based [mostly] off my friends from here. Actually, I've tried so many times to find a good blend of mods, I've even constructed a rich backstory that hosts my other projects. I'll share more details later! ^~^

Highlights have included Lucian saving the colony by charging an Imperial soldier with his family's broadsword, in the middle of a gunfight, to pierce his power armor. As well as us using the spare room in the research labs to brew a ridiculous amount of beer. Oughta give it a name, hehe...

Till then, though~, I've been playing Factorio. I reckon it's a great game, aye, and the mods make it even better. I got about halfway through my last playthrough [unlocking lasers and Mil/Chem science packs] before I got tempted by Bob's Mods and Angel's mods, as well as a slew of QoL upgrades like a To-Do List and a throughput graph. It makes me feel like I'm running an actual, automated factory, which as it turns out, is quickly coming to reality as well. ^_^

Got back into the Fire Emblem games recently. The 3DS games were some of my most played games on the system, but now I'm playing the GBA games. So far I've gotten through Lyn's tale and partly through Eliwood's. Can't wait for my GBA flashcart to get in so I can play these on real hardware!
The world of romhacks for this series is great too. So much variety from simple rebalances, to custom maps, to complete overhauls with new stories and everything. Shit like this is just stupid and I love it.

Ah, I don't know much about Fire Emblem, but I did used to have a GBA~ A clear one! Though I sold it many years ago, since my DS Lite could play GBA games as well. Can the 3DS do so?

Yep! Though you have to hack it first, as Nintendo never even sold GBA Virtual Console games, only gave a handful away to people that overpaid for the 3DS at launch. If you have a hacked 3DS, you can either make your own VC GBA games using injector programs or there is a homebrew firmware that boots the 3DS directly into it's GBA mode and let's you choose a rom to boot from.

However if you are a perfectionist, the 3DS is horrible for GBA. The top screen on those basically have rectangular pixels due to how the 3D display works. They also got rid of the option from the DS that changes which screen GBA games are displayed on.

Ah, I see~ Kinda reminds me of the PS Vita with how it can play PSP games. Though I suppose it's a bit different ^_^

Does the homebrew firmware not let you switch displays?

I'm not too sure. I've always just made VC injections because I prefer launching everything from the 3DS home menu. The firmware is called open_agb_firm if you want to take a look.

Funny you bring up the Vita. I was using mine with mGBA up until I got my GBA flashcart. It has some audio stutters, but the screen is almost perfect for x2 scaling and of course the dpad is to die for.

I sometimes find myself playing the obscurest of games and wonder why I can't just find something "normal". My latest obscure game is Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner.
https://
It's a Japanese only SMT game that was made in 1995 and then ported to the PSP. Luckily, the PSP has an emulator you can get online, and the game was available online. I heard about it from a Youtube video, and ended up clearing the game 2 weeks ago. Just like the other SMT games, you summon demons and beat up the other demons, and it had the charms of being an old but fun game. There's nothing huge about the game, the characters are basic and the combat system has it's quirks, but it was fun.

The game actually had a sequel that WAS released onto the 3ds called Devil summoner Soul Hackers. Maybe I'll have to give that game a try since it's makes lots of references to the first, and is pretty good from what I've heard.

A friend asked me to play EVE Online with him so I'm slowly getting back into it. That game is crazy addictive once you get past the initial complexity barrier (which is a pretty big hurdle, admittedly).

I've always been a big mario party fan, but it's never the same when playing computers. But with the new mario party game having online, I found this mario party discord that has meetups for people to connect to online rooms and play with actual people. You don't even have to chat or anything, just find a code on the discord and get playing. It was pretty fun too, the lag wasn't noticable, and the new game is overall well balanced for mario party. What I mean by well balanced is that the boards have a good feeling of flow to them, and most of them have a good coin economy where you don't just have 200 coins by the end of the game. Heck, if anyone here has interest, you should join me sometime.

For some reason I started playing TF2 again after a decade and it's still very fun

I've been playing World of Tanks. Frustrating most of time, but then you get the occasional very satisfying game ^~^

Shhh Is it still active? I would've thought that a lot of players would've switched to something like Overwatch by now.

malmon Surprisingly yes! The official Valve servers kinda suck because they have cheaters and bots, but there are quite a few community servers where you can find matches pretty easy.

Man, kind of makes me miss server browsers in modern games...

I feel like the lack of server browsers, or perhaps more the lack of free dedicated server software, is kinda what killed gaming for me somewhat. I still play a bit, obviously, but it always used to feel a bit more social before. Like when you'd find a server you like because it has a fun gamemode or plays your favourite maps, you'd eventually get to know the regulars on there, and potentially make some good friends.

Or if you were particularly keen, you'd run your own dedicated server with your own gamemode.

These days, you just go into the game, matchmake, play the match, then never see those players again.

Of course there are still games that follow ye olde model, but no so much with popular titles.

malmon I was actually talking about this the other day with my coworker. He's big into shooters and we played the new Halo together a little bit, and it just feels lifeless. Nobody talks unless it's to rage, there's no custom games, there's only like 3 gamemodes. It's just ridiculous.

I miss the days of seeing the same people in servers and getting to know them after seeing them dozen of times. I don't understand why devs seem so allergic to letting people be friends :/

Shhh I don't understand why devs seem so allergic to letting people be friends :/

Because they can't make money off of DLC/microtransactions/lootboxes if anyone can just host their own server.

So I picked up a copy of Disgaea 1 and 2 during the Spring Sale on Steam this year. I've been having a lot of fun with it. It's humor is pretty silly but the combat is really rewarding. The story is pretty bland so far but the dialogue is decent. I think this would technically be a SRPG, if you ever played something like final fantasy tactics I think you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Been playing One Step From Eden as of late. For those who ain't heard of it, the best way I can describe it is "a science-fantasy, grid-based rougelike action RPG with deck-building elements".

It's honestly fun as hell, with a controller. And on sale, last I checked!

read: one step from eden is megaman battle network if the main character were cute

I do love the fact this game contains an actual incest route. None of that stepsibling bullshit.

I picked up death stranding recently as it was on sale. Its pretty fun despite how mundane it is sometimes. It's pretty refreshing for me personally as I haven't really gotten excited about gaming for a while, and the game seems to be one of the few triple A games that was made with clear artistic intent. I also love the music so much, lol
