COUPLED tbf Discord did a lot of things right. They put together most of the communication tools that people wanted, and made it so that you can access basically any community with one login. But much like with many other things, most people don't seem to see the issue with a centralised system like that until it's too late.

I had my breaking point with Discord the other day when I realized they block VPNs altogether (at least I can't log into my account anymore). I'm sick of these websites becoming unusable when you want a little bit of anonymity, so I'm going to just avoid most of the mainstream stuff altogether. (Edit: I may have been wrong about Discord blanket banning all VPNs, maybe it only blocks some. Sorry I was crashing out T_T)
But you are right about it being hard to participate in a community when there's just a single #general chat with messages being sent constantly.

darpo And I think Twitter now requires a cellphone to make an account too? God it's so bad. I'd rather pretend the Internet is still in early development and these big social media sites don't exist yet. (Edit: and Reddit too! I can't log in to my Reddit account! They expect me to turn off my VPN!)
Yeah, I've not had issues with my VPN yet, except for on private trackers, but a lot of the time it does just depend on the VPN and whether the site has blocked it. Residential proxies are an option, but they're generally more expensive and limited.
I sort of get the feeling that the web in general is sort of on its way out. Like everything's getting too commercialised and locked down. Even the small sites are all behind the Cloudflare racket. Maybe we'll see a resurgence back to things like IRC and BBSes, but that's probably just wishful thinking ^^'7
Maybe you're right! Or something else that's better will come along. I want to remain optimistic for the future. It might take a while though.
