John Carpenter's The Thing and Idiocracy. Both of which I had only known about the general premise before seeing them for the first time today.
The Thing presently surprised me since I had based my expectations off of Big Trouble in Little China and Escape From New York. I'd had a somewhat schlocky horror film in mind and instead got something that I would unironically classify as true kino. The special effects held up wonderfully well for an early 80s movie.
Idiocracy was more or less in line with my expectations. The humor didn't always hit but it hit frequently enough and with enough force.
If you ever have ninety minutes of free time and are unsure of what to fill it with either of these two would be good picks.
