That particular area had very poor natural irrigation and artillery throughout the war completely destroyed the man made irrigation. The offensive started in August where it rained
The soil turned up by the artillery mixed with the rain created a lot of mud.Â
This created some pretty horrible conditions for the soldiers that had to fight in the battle
