I just finished this one and liked it quite a bit. Its writing is incredibly distinctive and thus has been the subject of a lot of translation controversy, but the Ixrec 2009 edition served me fine even if it took a bit to adapt to its writing style. This will be the first VN I ever reread in Japanese if I decide to reread translated ones, but even here there were some surprisingly beautiful prose passages in the translation.
Of course, I found out about it from the flash game NANACA†CRASH! (http://www.geocities.jp/lledoece/nanaca-crash.html), like most people probably did.
I won't reveal too much about the plot because I think you see a lot of it unfold rather beautifully, but it's about a guy named Kurosu Taichi who is one of the most eccentric, autistic weirdos in a VN and because of that I love him. He was a chuunibyou before the term even caught on, but even that doesn't do him justice. He is part of a disintegrating broadcasting club at a strange school called Gunjou Institute, and that's all I think you should know before playing if you have any interest.
As far as what effect it had on me: I don't think its individual relations between characters had as much pathos as some other VNs, but the overall setting and feeling of the game was soaked with enough profound emotion that it had a great effect on me in its totality that far exceeded the sum of its parts. I thought that was pretty interesting. I also liked how traditionally Japanese a lot of it felt even if it was in some ways a kind of sci-fi story (and one about seclusion, individualism, isolation, and other themes about removal from a larger culture instead of integration into it).
I also must say, I don't think I've ever crushed on a girl in a VN as much as Misato in this one. You know when you play a VN and there's one sprite of a girl which is sooooo cute that in her scenes you keep look forward to her turning into that sprite and you start blushing when she does? EVERY sprite of Misato was that cute. Completely unprecedented. Then again big boobies and big glasses is a combo I can never refuse.
If anyone else liked this I'm curious what they thought. I thought there were some things that kept it from being perfect, but overall it might quite a good impression on me. I even thought some of the ero scenes were pretty impressive for a game from 2003.
