Looks like Mastodon ( https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/ ) have taken off (a bit) as alternatives to twitter, so I wanted to create a thread about it. There's a really good article about it here . The cool thing is that you can host your own instance (anyone from any instance can follow you, and you can follow anyone from any instance, it's cool) and control your own fate, and TBH the network has been been around for so long (2007), and so many people have joined recently, I don't see it dying for a long time. I don't use Twitter much aside from casual browsing when all other entertainment avenues have been used up. I haven't typically been a fan of twitter either but I seem to have been hooked by this somehow... Posted this at like 1am so I didn't get the formatting perfect lol. Ended up just linking to https://rx14.co.uk/ because it'll just redirect if you're not logged in.

I guess I don't fully get the point of Twitter. Just seems like a forum but with a complete lack of organisation to me :/

Aside from that, it's really just celebs tweeting out opinions on random bullshit.

Yeah... You know, I could just limit my posts to members of my instance. Not to mention, Fedi has tons of privacy options like the prerequisite of approving followers before they can see your posts. It's not as comfy as it was when exclusively left-wing people used it, but I reckon there's still something for us.

Fedi is comfy. I'm on elekk.xyz. I'm glad to have a platform available that isn't filled up with adverts, and I tend to find that fediverse is less constantly depressing to look at than other social media.
I'm looking forward to Pixelfed becoming more mature so I can finally ditch Instagram for good.

floattube i think the idea elon sold when he was purchasing twitter was good but so far none of his irrational actions have fit his words.

overall idc as much cuz less social media is prob good for everyone and seeing my feed full of either "ree fuk elon" or "elon musk let me get some of ur ballsack musk in my face" is a good deterrent.

jojo123 whats the odds on them shutting down raru too? feel like if i wanted to use mastodon i'd either self host (with a linode default for this its really easy to now) or use one of the bigger/mainstream instances.
