I'll give him a few more days of recovery, and if he still doesn't show up, I'll cancel this battle as unresolved and try a different opponent.

In terms of the guard meter surrounding the combatant's health meter, when it turns red, they are at risk at receiving a 'guard crush'. After a few more blocked hits, when that happens it briefly turns blue, then resets to grey at full strength. At the very moment of a guard crush, the combatant initiating it glows his/her weapon blue also, dealing twice as much damage, and staggers the opponent a step.
