Battlefield 2 was a revolutionary game for its time. It featured gorgeous graphics, realistic gunplay, wide-open, varied maps, and dozens of popular player-made mods. The follow-up game, Battlefield 2142, put a futuristic spin on the series whilst streamlining the class system, allowing detailed soldier customization, and offering a whole-new gameplay experience in the form of Titan Assault mode.
Amazingly, even after EA shut down their official servers, both games still lived on, right up until GameSpy finally went kaput in mid-2014. By all rights, that shoulda been the end of the story. But where there's a will, there's a way; and the internet always finds a way.
What's the REVIVE Project?
Exactly what it says on the tin: A project to revive Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142!
Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of modders, coders, and sysadmins, both games have been brought back from the dead and are available for anyone to download. All for the low, low price of "free"! 😃
Do people really still play?
Well, of course! The peak was about ten-thousand people in one day during the summer, but it's usually about half of that. Regardless, there's usually two or three almost-full 64-player servers at any given point in the day, so you'll probs be good.
Iunno, is this legal?
Due to the total cessation of official support, both of these games are classifiable as "abandonware", a legal grey area where, although the original creators have every right to pull the plug, they usually don't care enough to bother.
Worst case scenario: The Revive team gets a Cease and Desist, and the community quietly disbands. All the more reason to play it while it's hot.

Alrighty then, how do I get it?
It's simple! Just head over to the Downloads page on Battlelog.co, register an account, and download the Revive Launcher. After you've chosen an install location, the bootstrapping program will automatically download and install both games and their expansion packs, and you'll be able to log in and start the game through the Launcher.
See you on the Battlefield, soldiers.
