I would have to say the best just because of pure flexibility is arch linux and ive used it the longest. It seems hard to set up but really is not.
Listen to this person.

Ubuntu is the most friendly distro imo, it should work fine for people trying their first linux.
Red Hat was my first :^)
Friendly != good. Friendly = bloatware, spyware, and slow runtime.

Honestly, (and sadly I suppose), the only time I use a certain Linux distro is when I need to penetrate my neighbor's wi-fi. Yes, I'm a cheap-o like that, haha. Just kidding 😃.
I use Linux back when I was in college (since it's required) and of all the distros I've used, Ubuntu is the closest to Windows. And since it's the closest, it's really not that hard to use it. But then I always struggle with compatibility issues since most of the applications I use are Windows-based.
Well no shit you're going to have compatibility issues. You're running software that's objectively not supposed to be ran. It doesn't matter if you're on Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, or fucking LTS Arch, you're going to have a bad time running Win32 apps. Period the end.
Also no one gives two fucking shits about you "penetrating" your neighbor's wifi with air-crack.
