It's got a decent plot and interesting characters, not to mention excellent animation and kickass fights. Definitely one of those shows where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Aside from that... Ever tried Black Lagoon? Jormungand is nice too; made by the same folk.
doublemunch If you enjoyed GitS and are looking for a serious anime full of action, I would definitely recommend Akira if you haven't seen it already. It's not a series, but it's still bloody brilliant and well worth an afternoon spent watching it.
biokouwr If you want a serious anime I can recommend Monster. If you like mind game anime and you have nothing against baseball I can also recommend the anime One Outs.
