It was a 3TB Seagate - one of the least reliable drives of all time. It's honestly amazing that it survived as long as it did.

My 500GB Seagate is still kicking after about seven years. I bought a Western Digital 1TB last year because I was worried it was about to fail but it's still going.

I've had a 1TB WD Black going for 10 years now. It's not plugged in atm though.

Also need to find a new CPU. Gonna wait a bit before dropping some money on the R5 2600.

    What's your current GPU?

Actually to be honest I probably won't upgrade until I get a nicer monitor. RX 580

Hmm, would the upgrade to a Vega 56 really be worth it? I'm not familiar with how the two cards compare

Seems like excitement is growing for the new AMD CPUs. I wonder how viable it would be to stick the 16 core in a SFF case

I'm pretty excited for those things, might upgrade for the first in a while!

Yeah! It'll definitely be on my list when I get a job (and the case arrives). Though the 16 core parts (apparently up to 300W) might be a little out of reach... unless I get creative with the water cooling.

Speaking of water cooling, the new corsair stuff looks pretty neat! It'll probably be more expensive than researching and buying parts yourself, but doing so can be somewhat risky for beginners.

oooh, the ASrock X570 mITX board looks interesting! Thunderbolt 3, and it has Intel mounting holes on an AMD socket.

Riight... Word of advice, make sure to play with the settings on your new IPS panel. The ASUS VG279Q I got had pretty lackluster color out of the box; none of that "brilliant white" and "swirling black" mentioned in the reviews, right up until I switched to another preset.

Kinda feel like that guy who didn't know he had a 144Hz monitor. I swear. xD

I must be an outlier or something, I swear. I hear about this so often, but when I first connected my 144Hz display, it just worked! Windows automatically set it to 144Hz.

yeah... factory monitor presets are the worst

glad my panel came colour calibrated so the only applicable settings to change are brightness and contrast

I don't know anything about modifying presets. I have an ASUS VG248QE. What preset do you guys think is best?

It did not work like that for me. I had to set it up manually.

Anyone else interested in the PINE smartphone coming out soon? A $99 laptop is one thing, but I could see this being a smash-hit in developing countries, as well as a staple hardware toy for enthusiasts like the Raspberry Pi.

Given how poor software support for the ROCK64 has been, not particularly~

Figured I'd cap off a hellish two weeks a new keyboard. Nice little mechanical number from Corsair. I wonder if their RGB lighting's as good as in the ads? ^^

I actually happened to be in a computer store the other day. Mashing about on a bunch of the keyboards, honestly the only one I liked was the razer blackwidow elite. Granted that could be because all the other demonstrators had shitty switches chosen.

I think RGB looks really pretty, but well, I don't spend much time actually looking at my keyboard, so it wouldn't affect my decision unless it was the only differing factor.

Yeah~, I'd considered that, but what really sold me was the programmable per-key lighting. Highlighting and color-coding hotkeys will come in real handy whilst building an interstellar empire. Also, since I'm planning on using a lot more terminal apps from now on, it'd be a handy tool till I've learned Emacs. ^_^

Heh, I never bothered with Emacs. But I know enough vim (not vi, i swear vi is the last of the great plagues or something) to make it my default text editor of choice, unless I need to do a lot of moving around of text.

Hyeah~, that's fair. Me personally, I'm drawn to its countless extensions and packages. I'm going to be able to perform basic SysAdmin stuff on my phone at work, so it might be handy to bring everything under one roof.

Dunno, desktop just shut down while on the freenas boot menu. Now it won't turn on with the EPS 12V cable plugged in.

It could be the motherboard, if perhaps something broke between the EPS sockets and the CPU socket. Though it powers on fine with the cable disconnected, so I doubt it's that.

It could be a botched liquid metal application, though I'm not sure how that could've happened.

I'll take a closer look in a little while.
