fileboard (project)

uh, so i've sort of come up with an idea i wanna work on.

i mean, i wouldn't exactly say the idea is unique; but i was thinking about how a file host like pomf.is could get turned into a community; and thought about building an imageboard on top of it.

then i thought, "hey, what if it wasn't just restricted to images?", which then lead me down the path of wanting to make a "fileboard" software.

basically it'd work pretty similar to an imageboard, except it'd be modernised and would support any file type.

i've put together a quick mockup of how i'd see the average thread looking (minus a tonne of small features); i'll post a screenshot below, but here is the link for anyone that wants to fiddle around with hover effects and stuff.

if anyone has any thoughts, questions, suggestions, or concerns, i'd appreciate hearing them :3

I said this in discord, but I think it would be pretty cool to have.
I've never really used imageboards, or found one that I liked(visually for the most part.)

I think it would be something cool to have, and I might actually start using it.
And from the screenshot, I think I'll enjoy the way this one looks.

That's a feature, not a bug.

To answer your question, FOSS imageboard-software vichan already allows for uploading of arbitrary files.
In fact, I believe that this feature is even called "fileboard" in their documentation. So why not contribute to vichan instead?
Unless, of course, you want to create something from scratch because it's fun, in which case I'd say go for it.

While vichan allows it, it's not really made for that purpose. And while vichan is great, it's also very old software that could probably do with a full rewrite.

Unless, of course, you want to create something from scratch because it's fun, in which case I'd say go for it.

Making something myself would be a lot more fun, and would allow me to make it exactly the way I see it in my mind. c:

I mean, I'd use it, but let's focus on Lewd first. There's still a bunch of features and touch-ups you promised, and I don't think the community is big enough to warrant developing an image board yet.

I don't see why an extra site has anything to do with Lewd; like, new sites get every day, how does me creating another site effect Lewd's community in the slightest?

I think @[deleted] means that you would have less time to work on lewd because you're working on the board.

I think that would be a great project. I've wished for a whle that someone would create a modernized imageboard but it seems like everyone thinks its a useless task since people are worried about "newfags" who aren't used to imageboards but i think that is dumb because there is plenty of talented folks who have never used an imageboard and get put off from joining a community because of how unintuitive it seems.. Please work on this.

meh, i dont really see anything that lewd is missing other than a chan-like quick reply panel

Actually, I was operating under the impression that this new site would be subordinate to Lewd, kinda like Lewdchan was.

After giving it a little thought though, this seems like a really fun project, and an excellent opportunity to grow Lewd while we're at it. My only suggestions are that guidelines be similar to Lewd; and tripfagging be encouraged, kinda like it is on Lainchan currently.

lol its not tripfags on lainchan every post gets a name from an array created by Kalyx with a bunch of different names from cyb movies, books, etc.

the layout seems to confuse people especially since there is usually no reply button by comments just the No.### which your supposed to click to reply to. also the fact that every post is a different width bugs me.

Most imageboards that have a quick-reply function allow you to keybind it to something instead of clicking on a post number. They just don't advertise it very well. Something like the New Reply button here on Lewd would work well. Even then there's the big reply window at the top of every thread.

Eh, matter of opinion. I tried out a theme with uniform post width and didn't like it very much but posts being as wide as their comments tends to leave a lot of blankspace.
