From what Laura Mulvey said back in the mid '70s, it comes in three simple terms us males do all the time: We look at women as objects, we look at women from a masculine, hetero point of view behind the camera, and the characters themselves represented towards the male viewer purely for pleasure. Feelings, thoughts, and tastes don't matter to a man other than the frame in question.
A female gaze is completely different by concept, but not the other way around, so this might be all due to "scopophilia".
