It’s rare to find a mafia related manga that hasn’t a 13-16 year-old mafia boss as the main character. But hey here we have Gangsta. .
Story:
Benya is a group of two mafiosi who are specialist at getting rid of anyone you like. It’s one of those action filled stories with many dark themes lurking in the backstory, exciting characters and interesting events.
The unusual factor is that this manga targets a more mature audience hence the theme of it.
All in all it’s a very interesting story.
Characters:
Warrick(sometimes Worick depending of the translator) – A one eyed white haired gangster who talks a lot and is the brain behind Benya. Well more or less, he seems like that guy with all the connections, the face of the organization if you like. He is a close friend with Nicolas.
Nicolas – Very dangerous, def and speaks very little, actually he speaks only when he is mad. He fancies Alex whom he sort of saved. As a tagged one, Nicolas is some kind of super fighter who kills everything easily with his sword.
Alex – Former prostitute and now the newest member of team Benya.
Chad – Corrupt police officer who hires Benya to do the dirty work for him.
Cody – Chads assistant and that’s what I could tell from the chapters I read. So far nothing special, just a supporting role.
Art:
When the art fits the story, it just makes the manga good on a whole new level. Kosuke managed to get away from his rather cutesy art to create this manga. I found it rather fitting for the genre, creating a nice…well a dark atmosphere.
Personal Enjoyment:
When it comes to mafia related things, I love em, and when it comes to mature themed mangas I love em too. Basically this manga was really refreshing, taking a brake from all the love triangles, squares and harems. I am sure the anime will be as great as the manga, but I can’t tell for sure as I am going to start watching it tonight.
Recommended to all who love darker mangas with mafiosi in it.
