Cbum's review series(?) - Introduction + Brazil

Hey there everyone on lewd who may be reading. I've lurked for the most part and have mainly stuck to the chat, so I thought this would help me get more involved with the boards. Please give me any feedback you may have. The idea is that I choose a movie from my brother and I's DVD collection and review it. Last night, I rewatched a Terry Gilliam movie I had fallen in love with on my first viewings, years ago; I'll give some thoughts I had throughout this latest viewing.

Plot

This is explained to us in our opening sequence which is actually a pretty decently sized prologue. In this opening, someone in Information Retrieval squashes a fly on the ceiling which falls into a typewriter and turns Tuttle into Buttle. Cut to a happy family on Christmas morning, suddenly an extremely oversized squad of police puts a sack over Mr. Buttle's head and takes him away, even cutting a hole that the Department of Works can't even fix, before they leave however they make the wife sign his papers and get a receipt and pay for processing.

And this is where our main character comes in.

So our main character, Sam Lowry, lives in a pretty shitty and boring world where everything is run by bureaucracy, with some 1984 vibes; he copes with this by daydreaming about being a metal valkyrie man who saves a damsel in distress.

Sam has a low-level bureaucratic job in the records department. He figures out that they made a typo with Buttle, instead of chasing the rogue heat-maintenance man Tuttle. Upon finding out that Buttle is dead, and his wife doesn't have a bank account to put the refund back into, he decides to deliver it by hand. After what you'd expect see upon this meeting with the widow and fatherless children, he sees the damsel of his dreams, but as a tomboy that now kinda reminds me of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Sam pursues her while also finding his way into suspicion of terrorism. The simple nature of the plot in contrast with it's needlessly complicated setting provides an engaging satire that resonates with you emotionally.

Sound

This song is so catchy that I've had it ingrained in my head since childhood. In fact, I've been listening to it while writing this review. I just like it that much.
Besides this, a score brings us to glorious heights and dread filled lows. Everything just felt right about it.

Presentation

Terry Gilliam knows how to make a movie. He blurs the line of reality, dreams, and nightmares with skill. Beautiful visuals contrast with the harsh visuals of reality. The ending in particular leaves a large impression on the audience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and put it as my go-to dystopian film. I recommend it to any that are interested.
