Hey people
My native tongue is Austrian High German, I can't really speak dialect. I've been learning English since young, but what really kicked off my becoming more and more proficient was making it my main reading language - which has often made me think that the best way to build foundations in new languages is simply reading and looking up vocab as you go - the best thing about it is that you get a good feeling of syntax in many different contexts - this point is lacking in textbooks, I often find.
I can read a bit of Spanish (Can't really speak it anymore), speak a bit of Japanese and understand everyday conversation in both - I've been very lazy with Kanji, so I am now waiting for the Japs to abandon their language elitism and switch to kana or romaji completely. (Beside my obvious sloth I think that would do wonders for the mental health and equality between people of diff backgrounds in JP)
I speak middle German decently, and can read old German^^
