If you watch an anime without subs or dubs, how much do you understand or If you watched an anime without subs or dubs, how much would you understand? Have you tried it? After some of my trials, I've found that I understand more than 90% of what it said. Sometimes, I have problems understanding when the dialect is not Tokyo. I'm especially bad with Kansai, though I love how they speak. Overall, though, I can understand most of dialogue and monologue. I'm not good at writing or reading Japanese, so signboards and everything that is written in Japanese cause me problems and reduces my understanding so I still prefer watching anime with subs. The openings and endings are a pain though. I mostly can't even get half of those lyrics right, and if I do, they end up having a different meaning QAQ. Maybe some of you already do watch anime without subs or dubs(I see a Japanese forum o.o) so I would like to know your opinion too~ If you haven't tried it, try watching a raw of an anime which you haven't watched. Its often fun~ (Wasn't sure whether to post this in anime talks or Japanese but decided to post it here anyway XD)

I'm strictly a sub kind of guy. My knowledge on the language is pretty small, so I need all the help I can get. The only time I watch dubbed versions of shows are when I enjoy the English actors' voices.

I understand all of it, since Japanese is very close to Chinese.

I cannot take Dubs. I'm a sub person but tbh i don't even need subs- I can translate almost anything i hear at this point. I'm bad at speaking it but when i started classes for Japanese i mostly only needed help on bigger sentences that rounded with KA- and KAI- Which are types of sentence structures that mirror words. I'm definitely not a professional though, like i said i SUCK at speaking it, though i am good with translating it when hearing.

For me its all sub I don't understand but u feel as if it's moreoriginal then the english voice overs besides dragon ball z

Subbed is only thing i watched, I can understand some things, but like Rias said, not detailed convos.

I can understand it but to a certain extent. Like based on their facial expressions and voice I can kind of point out what they're saying. But language wise? Nothing at all besides the basics.

I only know a few words and the numbers 1-20-ish... so whenever I do understand something I get a little too excited

I understand completely if it is a hentai/ecchi (since the words are limited to.. u know)

If it's a slice of life anime I'll understand most of it, the words that I'm unfamiliar with I usually understand due to context and so on. Anime with more complex plots are mostly mumbo-jumbo to me though.

When I watch kids anime, there's probability that I know the story 60%-100%.

And when I watch kind of Ghost in the Shell or Texhnolyze, it will be less than 60%.

obv the more dialogue-heavy shows will be harder to understand by just seeing the visuals

I can understand basic Japanese grammar, but I'm still fairly ignorant when it comes to vocabulary and Kanji, so I maybe can pick out anywhere from 15% to 25% of what's said. Ideally, that range will increase as I study more.
