What is your opinion on desktop apps using web technolgies?

Desktop apps being built with web technologies is not brand new to technology but it seems to be getting bigger.

What is your opinion on desktop application being built with things like coffeescript?

If you are unfamiliar, check out Electron which is one of the more prominent frameworks and is most notable for the Atom text editor.

I personally think that the idea is really cool but I don't think the technology is really ready for any significant commercial use due to speed limitations. Maybe one day, but it begs the question: why even bother when you could just use native code?

Not really sure how I feel about it. I think we might have to wait for more apps to be built on this technology.
I do know that apps that are just a fucking frame to show a website are pieces of shit and should go die.

I personally hate it.
Now, most of this comes from my personal vendetta against closed-source software and botnets.
Basically, anything that is affiliated with internet communication that doesn't need to be, is bad.
Also, bloat. there are plenty of ways to make a decent program, using a language for a purpose totally different from it's original isn't one of them.

Absolutely, It's the same thing cloud based services that are getting ever so prominent. I fear that everything will soon switch out to cloud based applications and thin clients. I cringe at the very thought of it

I wouldn't mind cloud computing bullshit if devs would publish thier source code.
Just so I could make sure nothing malicious was being implemented in whatever service they were offering.
Also so I could clone the program and host a private version locally.

Though I doubt that any of the reddit-tier ruby devs of this generation have ever considered publishing code, and everybody else is just in the technology business right now to make a quick buck off of user info (Facebook).
