If you're using Linux, what distribution, and why? I'm currently using Debian on my server, and I'm trying out Elementary OS on my laptop. As a fan of Debian based stuff, Debian 9 is a pretty obvious choice for the server. As for the laptop, I saw EOS and noticed it was Ubuntu based, which in turn is debian based so I figured I'd give it a go. So far its extremely simple to use, and it looks nice out of the box, if there was a distribution I'd say could replace Windows for long time users, this is a solid option. Being basically just Ubuntu with a neato theme, its got plenty of support. I probably won't stick with it for too long though, I prefer mucking around with more basic variants when it comes to my home machines.

Xubuntu Trusty on my MBP 2011, Ubuntu 14.04 for all my servers.

Antergros on my custom build, second drive, as a backup os. Sick of my ssd dying and then having no os to fix it.

Linux mint cause im lazy. Use to really like arch a lot and used that. But like i said really lazy.

Both my laptop and Samba server are running Debian 8.2 Jessie I distro hop all the time but I usually end up back on debian. EOS was nice for the laptop but not quite what I was looking for. I haven't tried Arch yet but I'm sure I will sometime

Arch at home, Debian on the server. I like to follow elementary OS as well, so I have it on a spare partition.

I'm using Mint on my laptop to get the hang of it, but I might try to get Arch on it over winter break

I've already tried a lot of linux distro and my fav is Ubuntu. Why? Because it's easy to use. And Kali Linux is a great choice for any people include me who loves to learn the basic of hacking.

It's been almost one semester since I switched to Arch and it's probably the best distro I've ever used. The installation is not as hard as people say, but the configuration takes some time.
Before Arch, I used Xubuntu after some failed experiences with Debian. It just worked.

I'm using Ubuntu for my servers. I have already tried Ubuntu Desktop and Linux Mint. I installed it on my laptop. They're fine but I uninstalled it because for no reason. Lately I discovered this DeepIn Linux and soon I'll try it. :3

On my main development rig I've got the SSD on Ubuntu 16.04 with Gnome 3.18, and kernel 4.2.x
and on the 1TB WD Blue has Debian 9.

On my backup rig has Ubuntu 15.10 with Gnome 3.18.

On my chromebook is Ubuntu 14.04LTS with Gnome 3.14

On the server that's at the house is Debian 8.2.

On my mail server: Debian 8.1.x

On my main hosting server: Debian 8.1.x

On the load balancing servers: Debian 8.1.x

Why do I use linux? Well I like to have more control over my OS then Winblows or Mactoss.

Just recently switched to Void Linux on my Thinkpad and I must say that I'm kinda in love with it. :3 It runs smooth, comes with no bloat, is rolling like Arch Linux and has all the packages I need.

On servers I'm still using Alpine Linux.

I use Kubuntu because I'm a recovering Windows user, and Kubuntu is pretty much as close as you can get to Windows with Linux (in terms of just-werks-ness and UI).

I switched from Arch to Antergos, which is just Arch with installer.

I use arch, but usually reccomend antergos to new users until they get confortable with installing from scratch. I prefer arch to debaian on the desktop due to packages frequently being out of date, but that really doesn't matter unless youre developing. Also I like the AUR.

I use Debian on my home server because of the wide support base and stability. If I use Linux on daily use computers I would either use Ubuntu (again, wide support) or Gentoo.
These days it's just too time consuming for me to install Gentoo and nothing Linux feels as smooth as OS X imo (sorry...)

If I need to setup a web server, MySQL, and all that, I prefer using Ubuntu or CentOS. For personal use, I always go with Arch or Debian-based distributions.

All of the weird donation shit on elementarys page scared me off. They were having you put in a download ammount before getting the ISO, but then complained when people put in $0.

I don't really appreciate the default options to pay money for an OS that I could get for free almost anywhere else, so I'm with you on that. However EOS itself is not that bad.

I think what elementary OS is doing is absolutely brilliant. My only quarrel with it is the (understandable) inclusion of the ubuntu software center, which shovels poorly made proprietary software, making them the favourite/recommended options. While the presence of proprietary software can be disabled, it is only temporary, hence diminishing the OS's utility as a freedom respecting distro for those with an absence of technical knowledge. Otherwise, it has incomparable ease of use for a GNU/Linux ditribution, as well as being one of the best looking/functioning distros out of the box.
I quite like the donation system as it in no way contradicts the ideals of free software, whilst supporting the project. Remember, the only part of free software that must be gratis (or more spectifically of no extra cost) is the source code. Even if the ability to make the price 0 was removed, it could be legally aquired from other distributors (or others with a copy) at no cost. This is because you are paying for the software's delivery to your system, not a license.
Fortunately the issues ought to be ammended in the near future, with the next LTS release of Ubuntu arriving and the abandonment of the software center in favour of GNOME software (which is not available from the 14.04 repositorys, and likely won't ever be.)
