Small details in gaming.

Usually, while the graphics and gameplay might be great, I find that games that do the smaller, graphic features, easter eggs, or more nitpicky and lore type stuff are really worth remembering. Whether it's a side quest, a neat feature, or something else, what'd be something that stood out of a game for you?

One of my votes goes back to the first generation Pokemon games:

I am a huge * souls game fan mostly because I absolutely love the way the game tells stories

In Dark Souls II there is a character named "Manscorpion Tark", his story is very unclear but he makes hints that his master is a great ineffable being of white. Then after completing some tasks that he besets on you he says the following

But our master never dies, only changes form, so that he may seethe for all eternity.
Brave human, you have yet to face your greatest perils.
Take these. May joy await you at the end of your travels."

Which is obviously referring to seath the scaleless from DS1, In fact many of the lord souls that you get from the game are in reference or have their origins to Dark Souls 1

There are a lot of things that you kind of have to 'go out of your way' to find but it is really rewarding for the people who love the lore of the game

you can kill a boss during a semi-cutscene

Dark souls 2 lacked amazing game mechanics but the story was still incredible, pales before DS1 though

Dark Souls 2's issue is that it's a good game that has to live up to a better game.

Anyways beack on topic; MGS V has some nice attention to details.
-If you use the poop tape you can hide in stalls and nthe guards won't suspect anything
-Cassette tapes in general
-You can cause cars to slip if using your horse's poop
-You can put the child soldiers in a car and fulton them insteas of using the helicopter or the fulton upgrade
-Messing with guards in general

I've always liked when games do cosmetic changes for special holidays such as in The Simpsons: Hit and Run where the main menu gets a makeover whenever it's a holiday.

Another thing I've always had a fondness for is when normal gameplay has layered music that changes as you do certain things, like moving around to various sections of the world. It's a small detail but it gives the setting so much life. The Pikmin games and the original Paper Mario had a real knack for this but it goes without saying that Banjo Kazooie and Tooie were the ones that really took it to its fullest.

In real life, soldiers in 'Nam didn't get a HUD or motion tracker, meaning they had to rely on sights, sounds, and intuition alone to detect their enemy. Luckily, the two rifles in common use at that time (the M-16 and the Type 56 [Chinese AK-47 clone]) had highly distinct sounds that allowed soldiers to tell one group from another.

The M-16 (demonstrated below at 0:54) has a short, concise sound; almost like a sub-machine gun. By comparison, the AK has a much "meatier" report, which is unmistakable in close quarters.

Granted, there's always the possibility that one of your allies will pick up an enemy weapon, leading to a potential friendly fire incident. Luckily, weapon jamming is conspicuously absent from this game, making these instances a rarity.

If you keep clicking on the same individual unit more than 3 times in a row without deselecting in some RTS games, and the game will play out "pissed off", "spoiling", or even "suggestive" lines for that unit depending on personality.

In some games, if you left your character idle for too long and do nothing, the camera will switch to a live feed that will let you look at what is happening in your general vicinity, or your character will do random things such as kicking a can to crack the camera and singing songs.

Actually, a bunch of your dialogue from that game is complete and utter gold. It's a pity there's so little of it.

Forza Horizon 4 has this lovely mechanic known as "Horizon LIVE", basically an hourly event lets players gather at a randomly-selected point on the map, and perform some cooperative driving challenges. The events themselves are pretty tame and can be completed in under five minutes if enough people show up, but the best part of

Crystal clear waters that shimmy around in unison, two unique shots of a castle at night when starting up a game, the atmosphere itself, and what could be even better when certain instruments/vocals start hitting you through your soul that's always been on for over 20 years and realize you can't modify some settings while in combat/escape phase.

I love reading mini "books" or diaries in survival horror games like Resident Evil or Alone in the Dark.

I look for guides to discover all documents to read and try to figure out stuff i haven't before. When i discovered secret rooms in AITD - The New Nightmare, i totally felt like i accomplished something meaningful.

I've always been a huge fan of the Ace Combat series of games, and one of its primary draws is the surprisingly-deep lore they've constructed over the years. See, the games are set in a completely different planet nicknames "Strangereal", and one of the early games (Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere) detailed an event called the "Intercorporate War" which began in 2040. This conflict was especially notable to the player, as it saw widespread deployment of a technology called COFFIN, or "COnnection For Flight INterface", that provided a pilot with full 360-degree vision around her plane.

Starting with Ace Combat 5 (set in 2005), we've seen early prototypes of the technology, first as tessellated displays linked to external cameras...

... to AC7 (set in 2019), which apparently has the first model that interfaces directly with your nervous system.

The "small detail" here is in the paintscheme of an enemy ace squadron that appears in the new DLC missions. Their Su-47s have the tailcode "PE GR032". A curious coincidence, since General Resource was one of the primary belligerents in 2040's Intercorporate War. Combined with a comment by your wingman identifying them as PMCs, and it looks like they've pretty much confirmed where the timeline is heading with future games. Fancy that, amirite? ^_^

It's amazing how sometimes the best stories can evolve from the simplest of ingredients. I had a pawn in RimWorld that had cancer, right? But she was also pretty useless and our colony poor, so I didn't care even as the tumors metastatized. But then I had a gander at her traits. One of them was "Universal Love", and as a result, every single colonist loved her in turn.

I realized that every single person in that game was really a human being. They had stories to tell, flaws, and loved ones too. As a result, I immediately had our researchers develop a chemotherapy drug and spent our meager coffers on the resources necessary to synthesize it in bulk. There was never more than just enough, and she needed triple the dose for one final, stubborn tumor, but soon she was entirely in remission, and ultimately, completely cured of carcinoma.

It was a good feeling.
