Should I learn JavaScript or.....

So I've been practicing HTML and CSS for a while now. So I've been wondering if I should continue practicing what I know or is it really necessary to learn JavaScript?

What are you trying to do? HTML and CSS are just markup languages. You can't write any programs with only them.

If you've learnt CSS and HTML, I think basic JavaScript would be a nice addition.

It really depends on what you want to do, if you want to be a frontend developer, I'd say that basic JS is something you'd need.

I'm definetly not the most experienced around here, but from my limited knowledge I would highly recommend you learn JavaScript. It will allow you to build much more functional websites and most modern sites make use of JQuery and many times Bootstrap to make them professional and mobile-friendly (both of which utilize JavaScript). Ontop of that, if you ever decide to go into the profession the merit of knowing JavaScript will definetly weigh in your favour as most front-end developers (as far as I know) are practically required to know it nowadays. As I mentioned earlier though, I'm not really in a position to give you a definite answer, you might want to wait for someone more experienced to give their input.

Well, I do want to get a job as a front-end web developer. I know at least some JavaScript/jQuery is required and/or highly recommended for the job. I just wanted to know whether or not to learn it now or to just go ahead and polish my skills in HTML and CSS. I'm guessing I should start now though? It'll give me more time to learn a lot of JavaScript and be ready for a job.

I'd recommend you learn javascript before honing your HTML/CSS skills. If you know basic JS (most likely with JQuery), you can implement it into your creative process.

I guess what I mean to say is it's better to get better at things once you've got all the tools.

Don't wait. HTML/CSS is just a tiny tiny part of webdev.

Javascript is the only language that runs natively on every browser, so it's a must if you want to do frontend development. If you are only interested in the frontend I would recommend focusing on just JS until you can make stuff with it. Then look into other languages (Python would be good for the sheer amount of learning resources if nothing else).

JavaScript is worthwhile to learn. Even professional developers that hate JavaScript end up using JavaScript in some capacity (in my experience). Plus it lets you do some fun/cute things pretty quickly - so yeah I'd recommend at least playing around with it.

Well, it's not like there is a choice if you want to add any logic to a page. I wonder if the upcoming WebAssembly will change this.
