Someone has Nintendo fans a due service by unlocking the Amiibo exclusive DLC in recent and future Nintendo games.
Basically there's an Amiibo accessory called the Amiiqo that lets you back-up the data of an Amiibo for $50 because otherwise that Amiibo is locked to one game at a time, and yes, it's Nintendo answering it's own shitty hardware design with just more accessories, but someone has found a way to get some use out of it by letting you download the data of any Amiibo from the internet right onto the device, and use that to get Amiibo unlocks in any game (
This is what Nintendo should have been doing with Amiibos since the beginning, more or less, but better late than never. Of course Nintendo is upset and throwing a tantrum over it like they are wont to do:
"Nintendo will vigorously enforce its intellectual property rights and will work to protect its greatest assets, its beloved characters and products."
I interpreted "greatest assets" as "toy deals and retailer exclusive, day-one DLC", but you get the idea. Being realistic: anyone who actually buys Amiibos rarely does it for the content; they are usually just some person, who through either sheer strength of will or blinding ignorance is still a Nintendo fan in 2015 and buys them because they are physical collectibles. Anyone who actually buys Amiibos is still going to buy them; meanwhile people who just want to play video games don't have to waste money on these over-priced toys to get content. Everyone wins. Beyond that, Nintendo is so shitty at actually producing Amiibos that most people can't even get them to begin with. Whether because of limited supply, or because an Amiibo is exclusive to a retailer that doesn't exist in their country (namely, the Target exclusive Amiibo fiasco that blew up when all Targets in Canada shut down before the figure was even released), most people can't get Amiibos even if they wanted to, making those entire parts of the game unplayable for most people who have already paid and purchased the game.
Regardless, Nintendo sees it as unfair to them, despite them treating everyone else unfairly to begin with, and now they think people creating services like this one are the problem, when in fact Nintendo is the entire problem. It's a mother fucking mindfuck how people still buy Amiibos, or how these toys remain relevant in games if at all.
