  • What do you think happens after we die?

Okay a few ground rules for this thread.

No posting stuff like "We die"
No troll posts, I want a serious discussion about this.
Religious responses are welcomed, although I would LIKE to keep in scientific if possible, but you can still post religious views.
Don't trashtalk people, debates are welcomed though.

My views is that it's just the same as before we were born. When I sleep, I usually don't see me dreams, or I might not dream at all. All I know, when I wake up and when I'm half asleep, is darkness. And I think that's the same as what's going to happen as to when we die. I was thinking a few days ago that maybe our organs actually work longer than scientists believe. I think we might 'sleep' for a while, but after that, we go into a coma-like state, and disappear.
Your views?

Deleted my post by accident because dumb mouse, so let's try this again.

We die. That's it. It's like unconsciousness but to a permanent state. No input or output, you're just gone. Your brain is rotting, so no memories or any of the like to accompany you anywhere if you choose to interpret it as going somewhere. Our sentience isn't equipped to understand that kind of level of the void, even I can't explain or comprehend it properly, but that's basically it.

You know how it was like when before you were born? No? Yeah, like that.

Anyways, that was exactly my point. We just stop existing, close to reverting time basically, but not really. xD

I know you said that, but it's like telling me to tell you what chocolate tastes like but not to say 'chocolate'.

        It's a base fucking taste, it's chocolate.

You have a valid point there. Not gonna lie.

Honestly, just thinking of what death would feel like is already overwhelming and I immediately begin to feel depressed. While I'd like to say that there's an afterlife out there, the chances are it's probably just going to be a deep void yes. But in addition to that dark emptiness, I'd feel a crushing sensation, like I'm a small, tiny clover of existence, before poof. Gone. All of me.

Honestly, death is something most don't deserve to experience, at least at an early age. It's when we've experienced everything worthwhile in our life that we should close our eyes and disappear.

But yeah, that's just my dirty, shitty two cents.

Awh. Don't feel depressed. I actually feel that way a lot too. Death is overwhelming, and I get anxious just thinking about it. The reason I brought this topic up was because a friend of our family who was almost like a grandpa I never had died not too long ago.

I have honestly no idea what will happen when we die. I like to think optimistically and imagine there's something of an afterlife or reincarnation, but we just don't know.

What really, really scares me is whether we, as living beings, will ever discover what'll happen after death; if we do discover there is/isn't anything after life, I have a feeling we'd undergo a massive change towards our existentialism and goals as a human race in knowing the meaning of life - right now, all we want to do is expand and survive into the universe and beyond (again, optimistic), but what if it's something so horrible or depressing (or exciting and breathtaking) that we just decide to give up in that pursuit of survival; basically giving up on life?

Of course, it's equally scary to assume that we'll never know, as living beings, what might happen after death.

I see where you're coming from. If humans knew what lay beyond life, and if it was something good, people might just start committing suicide, homicide, etc. Just to get to that afterlife that's so great. And if we start searching the universe and find a better planet that has all of our needs but better, we're all going to go there, give up, start reproducing so much that we all just overcrowd that one. It's pretty stupid to be honest.

The best choice for humankind is to never discover life after death. Many of us have settled comfortably into our own shell of ignorance. What knowledge that could possibly be unearthed from the minds of the dead could potentially create a disaster the likes of which history will never be able to compare.

                  I think.

The same point as I made in my reply. xD The discovery of an afterlife will lead to catastrophe. We all know that.

I think not truly knowing what happens after death is what keeps a lot of people going.

                      Maybe.
Honestly not knowing what happens scares me, I like to fantasize about something great, but I doubt it's anything but that. Are our lives pointless in the end? We grow up just to disappear? Knowing that, I don't like it and it actually keeps me from living life like other people do. Without worrying what's going to happen the next day.

If it's a pick-me-up to anyone, at least it picks me up, don't worry about what happens after you're dead. You won't care.

                        Because you'll be fucking dead.

                          Well that is true.

House puts it quite well in one of the last episodes of the show where he drugs Wilson and makes him unconscious to run him a round of chemo since he didn't want to do it, and just wanted to die on his own. When he woke up he said, wanna know what dying is like? That, except without the waking up on the sofa part.

Your personality is in the brain, an ever changing pattern of neurons, created through your genetics and your enviroment (people you interact, life experienced, etc). When you die your brain stop working, so as a result, so do you. You just dissappear and what's left is your vessel which is your body. It's a pretty sad way to look at it but I think, if anything, it should make you value life more as it's the only thing you have.

The fact that you referenced House makes me like you so much.

But, I agree. There's no evidence to suggest anything after life, so why not live life to the fullest?

Yeah. But still, not knowing scares me. I'd rather know what I have in store for me.

                                  15 days later

I beleive we get reborn as a new human or animal. I think it's an awesome tought that i could one day become a cat!

Idk what's gonna happen. But I think that's the point. No one knows. All humans share one thing in common. We all die.

@"Waifu" summed up what I was going to say in his/her post already.

Not trolling here, I believe that we just die; we seize to mentally exist. Humans have a hard time comprehending this idea just because we cannot imagine what it is like to simply have all thoughts seize to exist so they try to lie to themselves with different theories (ie. religion, reincarnation, etc.) We just won't let go of that small amount of remaining hope that we have to continue existing even after death.

I honestly have no idea, like most people. But I hope that we go into a really deep dream and live our lives through that. Or a second life, but maybe I'm wanting too much.

                                        I hope it's not just a whole load of nothing ;_;
