    old school or new?

i play afps/tac shooters, mostly source games.  ground the shit out of tf2 and cs series, also nethack and some smaller roguelikes.  been playing go but would like to get into dota as it seems fun.  hit me up if you're good at it and up for teaching somebody totally new

I emulate and play rare/obscure games. I also play the massive flood of japanese localized games that has been coming in lately.

I play New Vegas pretty much religiously

I think that's the only video game I play anymore lol

What's the better sandbox - Skyrim SE, or New Vegas? Mods included.

Given that they're made by the same company, run on the same engine and that their respective modding communities have a lot of overlap I think picking a better sandbox between the two comes down to nothing but personal preference. Personally, Skyrim bored me after about 40 hours. Without mods of course but I don't feel like they would've been able to do much for me besides adding some novelty for a brief amount of time. Meanwhile I've dumped a little under 300 hours into New Vegas and I'm still learning new things about it. Skyrim does have the larger and more active modding community so you'll likely get more out of its mods than of New Vegas'.

time tested, source game so you can customize it to high hell and it runs on everything, f2p, not confined to blizzard-hosted game servers (no 20 tickrate, jesus christ), also fun semi-obscure competitive community virtually free of underage

i genuinely believe the overwatch mentality is what's been killing the fun in video games

I have never played Skyrim with mods, but I will tell you that playing New Vegas with mods is the difference between it being a really good game and the best game I have ever played

I've recently been rather fond of what I call "idle building" games. Games like Tropico, Cities: Skylines, and Prison Architect. By design, these games essentially function as a self-contained simulation, with the player being able to modify various aspects by placing buildings or changing myriad "global variables" (edicts/ordinances/policies, respectively). It's fun to tinker with.

I know it's a bit bigger than that, but have you ever played Civilization?

Maybe I should try some of those "idle building" games since I always loved the more "comfy" aspects of building etc. in Civilization V. I never went for military victories or really any victories but a self-imposed one: to convert everyone to my religion (and usually get diplomatic victory along the way). I've heard Civ 6 has a "religious victory" and I'd probably love that; shame all the character sprites are so goofy looking. I loved Rollercoaster Tycoon as a kid too though Civilization's turn system was a lot more fun to me.

I like these type of games as well. I think you'd like rimworld too if you enjoy prison architect.
I've played city skylines before but I'm more of an OpenTTD kind of guy. I'm too lazy to build beautiful cities or anything that you usually see on r/cityskylines. Dealing with traffic is difficult and I kind of don't enjoy that aspect of the game because I have no idea what I'm doing most of the time haha. Everything else is great though. I think I'll play it again one of these days. Ahhh too many games to play. Been meaning to get into factorio as well.

OpenTTD is great! At least it's the closest game I could find to Industry Giant 2. The latter doesn't really work on modern versions of Windows, but I actually haven't tried it on Linux yet.

I've started getting more into Final Fantasy XIV. It's surprisingly a very comforting game; not sure why. I'd love to know of any other games that are just strangely... i dunno, cool? to play.

Sounds worth a try! I just wish that the devs weren't so stubborn about not supporting multicore whatsoever.
