Some of society's problems that concern you?

All this guff about a "Heartbeat Bill" in the US has me genuinely worried. It's always a lovely day when one's civil liberties are up for debate.

    I think so too :/
All around me in Vienna there are tremendously beautiful buildings and then there are modern block buildings that just don't fit :-(

That seems less like a problem with contemporary architecture itself, and more a problem with the planning authority that allowed such a building to be placed in the vicinity of ones with a completely different style.

I actually quite like contemporary architecture, but when it's in an appropriate setting. Seeing a fancy glass building in the centre of Kraków's old town would definitely sadden me, but amongst other modern buildings, I think it's nice.

That's actually a rather nuanced opinion, Mal. I guess what people really dislike is incongruity.

Nah, the empty spaces were where buildings were bombed to ruins during the siege of Vienna 45.

Yes, it is often fine when by itself, but among historic buioldings I find it an eyesore.

I'm loving what's happening in my home country right now: videos showing two main figures of the far-right gov offering shady deals to a (fake) russian female oligarch have appeared and now the coalition in the gov is breaking apart.
In September we can vote again and I hope for the best :-D

The premise of Clown World is starting to get a little too real to me and I don't mean in the way /pol/acks use it. I'm just utterly baffled by so many things going on in the world right now.

Austria? The guy who retorted by complaining that it was a targeted political attack against him?

Yes :-) We all knew something like that must be going on and it's good, that it has been brought to light.
The 'attack' is said to have been made by the "Zentrum für politische Schönheit" which means center for political beauty... haha^^

Still, don't think that this kind of stuff is standard in Austria (like it is in Hungary and Poland) - that's exactly why there is such an outrage

I'm starting to get tremendously worried about climate change. This shouldn't be a partisan issue - the reality is slapping us right in the face - but everyone's either too busy, too greedy, or too shortsighted to do much about it.

Do not go broke if you're one of the transgender kind here in the U.S. once another rollback on Obama's "equality in federal-funded shelters for the questionable homeless" because if you do, you'll get hurt, it seems traditional extremist religion in conservative circles is already taking root in some parts of the country.

@Backlash, @floattube, you have better watch your funds this time around or else I rather hope you won't suffer the full consequences of this repeal once it goes into place.

The rise of the far-right to the power worldwide and the dangers of the oversimplication of complex solution to complex problems leading the population to believe that the short-terms solution are the best in every scenario, because:

    1.Are easy to grasp
2.Don't need to wait too much
3.Don't need to think too much

And after the short-term plan fails everyone get frustrated about their choice and give space to a autoritarian regime, arguing "Now the order and prosperity will return soon".

The majority of people doesn't care about the power struggle in politics what they really wish it's a confortable life (please correct if i am wrong), without being bothered by the side effects of a crisis

    Welp that it :P

I think a lot of people do care about the power struggle, but not for the right reason. It's sort of become more of a spectator sport - people want their team to win because fuck the other team, not because they've actually thought things through.

This is a symptom of lives being comfortable. No matter who wins, chances are things aren't going to change much in the short term, so a lot of people don't really care about the consequences of choosing a certain party.

Three Arrows released a rather important video yesterday examining the modern right's talking points on the issue of immigration, and the historical parallels presented by the surge of xenophobia in the U.S. today. I once hoped that the election of center-right parties like the Democrats would stem the tide, but given how ICE detention centers were established under Obama, I highly doubt it.

I know I am very late with this but I wanna say thanks for caring <3

Oh great, not these tragedies again, this time in El Paso and Dayton. Adding the insult to injury, Mexico now gets involved in the investigation because six of their nationals were included in the victim count. Total possible dead people are already well over 70.
El Paso in question is the epicenter of Trump's first major move against immigration there, which could be related to his latest tirades.

I now know exactly where all these past major global incitements come from including a recent hate-filled manifesto, 8chan. It is bound to shut down because its provider refuses to give any more support to keep it running because of this. I even was there once briefly as a casual anon user when I was trying out various forums years ago long before I came here.

The articles are from CNN, you can find it here:

Black smoke and rain covered part of the country because the president decided to burn as much forest as inhumanly possible really fast and now he's trying to censor anything relating to LGBT on tv and allowing the police to kill anybody they please, it doesn't help the brains behind him is some wannabe warlock who believes there a new world worder trying to implant communism on global scale, there's a gay dictatorship, pepsi uses cells of aborted fetuses in their beverage, evolution is wrong and once he pointed a gun to his child daughter's head and threatened to kill her for no reason, all due to a desire to defeat communism and save christianity, I never thought we could sink THIS low before.

toilet of south america, only venezuela is worse, now the forest fire can be seen from space
  • LucianDreamer 08-23-2019, 10:01 AM
I have a bad feeling the military is already becoming high alert over some crazy small group's "Go to Area 51 and storm the place prank" meme come late September. Being a restricted zone and the talking point of conspiracies, they would no doubt make all potential curious trespassers either leave, caught, or worse.

I genuinely wonder why Brazil is allowed to lay claim to the Amazon. I'm usually never for foreign intervention, but in this case something really has to be done.

Right? It's like someone's playing the long game and trying to get us desensitized to violence. We already sweep the poor and crippled under the rug; what's a number on a weekly news article?
  • Question 08-31-2019, 10:07 PM
I personally enjoy The Onion's take on mass shootings, which is to recycle the same headline over and over again. I really wonder what's the cause of so much violence. Medical journals and scholars and such point to similar characteristics between mass shooters (lonely, suicidal males with emotional problems potentially stemming from financial or relationship issues) and other various risk factors, but my question is what about our society allows so many people to feel marginalized to the point that they try something like this.
