What is everyone's favorite text editor and why?

For me I'm usually switching between Emacs and Atom, and not really a text editor but Visual Studio when I have to *shudders*

I like Emacs for the customization aspect, and I'm not sure why I like atom but some of the features that I like are mutli line editing, easy snippets, and pretty simple packaging system.

I use the vim mode for both

As for editor theme I use primarily solarized dark, but right now I using a Halloween theme because it fits the month better

What does lewd use to edit text?

Im lazy and just use geany on linux and sometimes text wrangler on OS X. I started playing with atom a bit, but like why does it lag? It is the only text editor Ive used that lags.

Performance issues are because atom is built on electron

I don't have any lag problems with it? When was the last time you used it? It has pretty bad performance issues but nothing to bad for me. To be quite honest I really only follow it because I feel like it will be great one day. Currently I can't recommend it, you are better off with Sublime Text 3 which Atom is almost a carbon copy of.

I use Atom and Sublime Text. I mainly use the monokai theme on both of them.

because it's written in js and is not a native application.

As of right now I am using Notepad++ but I'm considering switching to Sublime Text 2.

    Vim. It's what I know.

I don't use syntax highlighting, so the theme is just whatever I have as fg/bg colors in my terminal.

Its been about a week or two since i tried it. So not that long, when I use it on windows, basically unusable but that is understandable it is windows in a VM(but a vm with 4 gigs of ram and 2 processors with 100% execution cap). OS X the lag is not that bad but still lags a little. Text wrangler is basically sublime as well from what I understand, I have actually never sat down and used sublime, hear good things.

Geany has been my editor of choice for a bit but lately ive been enjoying using OS X on my macbook, so text wrangler a lot lately.

As for theme im using solarized dark on text wrangler and geany. Just used the default theme in atom when I was playing with it.

    That explains it.

Sublime Text master race. At some point I used notepad++.
Sublime Text is beautiful, though. I use 3, but 2 is alright too.
  • Usuka 10-03-2015, 11:23 PM
    Sublime is nice all around.
I'm getting into Vim, but it's hard to learn.
Nano is really nice for basic stuff.

I like using vim but sometimes I find myself turning off vim controls for more "complex" editing, which kind of kills the point of using vim in the first place.

    I tend to use notepad++ for the code highlighting, because I often forget the closing semicolons;

I'm using nvim right now. I'm thinking about getting into emacs though because I've heard the plugin support is much better.

Might I ask why? Do you find it distracting?
  • taymor 10-07-2015, 08:09 PM
I use almost exclusively nano, not because I think its the best or anything, I just needed something to use a long time ago and haven't had time to learn anything that might be better. Also whenever I use anything else I always use C-o C-x when I want to exit and that never helps much at all.
  • losi 10-07-2015, 08:54 PM
    notepad++ works fine for me.

I use open source text editor from Adobe named Brackets. It's really great especially for anybody who loves to make the web.
Notepad++ is alsoa great choice because it's simple, and no lag.

I probably spend more time installing and configuring text editors than i do using them
  • LoliPantsu 10-10-2015, 06:21 PM (Edited 10-10-2015, 06:22 PM)
I use notepad. I don't really have a need for a good text editor because I'm lazy and unproductive.
  • Ashley 10-10-2015, 06:46 PM
I use Sublime or Atom. Notepad/nano if it's just a small edit, and IntelliJ IDEA if I'm doing Java.
  • Tiny 10-10-2015, 07:17 PM
Vim has been pretty good to me overall today (just started), but I feel clunky. I need.. minimalistic things to work around. It hurt my brain a lot today while doing php.
