I want to believe, but until we have scientific proof, I'm not that hopeful.

I'm an atheist but everyone always thinks I'm religious because I'm highly interested in religion's effect on history and art. I've probably read the bible more than any of my Christian friends lol.

To me, believing in the religious gods others put faith into is like believing that your life and efforts are best left to someone else's hands, and I don't believe in that.

Even if the gods that popular religions believe in are proved to be real, I believe more that they exist purely to inspire one's own faith and trust in themselves as their own gods, to put matters into their own hands than accept things as pure chance and divine intervention.

    Hey guys,
You remember that part in the old testament where God commands the Israelites to kill every single person in this city, including the women and children, then to burn down the city and destroy all of their artifacts?
You remember that part where they do that, but some guy steals a couple gold bars, so God threatens to destroy every single Israelite?
You remember how, after that, Joshua had to talk God down from killing his entire congregation?
You remember how the same thing happened over and over again throughout the book of Joshua, just with God getting slightly more lenient each time?

In the Bible, God commanded the Israeli people to commit genocide on several civilizations. That's not some exaggeration or misrepresentation. They dedicate a book and a half to it.

    Just... fuck, man. Fuck.

your asking of this question implies the answer will be no, but I'll just say "any god"

I grew up in a very religious household. Attended church services on saturday night and sunday morning; as well as bible study and youth group throughout the week. I went to "aquire the fire" and other christian events yearly and used my free time as a teenager to spread the word of god. I was mistaken in thinking that because I was a good christian, nothing bad would ever happen and I would have a life full of blessings. It's kind of wierd, one bad thing happened and I've switched my view of religion overnight. I've been an athiest for nearly 10 years now and I can't even remember what it is like to believe in a god; I no longer understand what goes through someones head to come to the conclusion that there is a god out there watching over us. But, I can understand what's appealing about religion. My uncle was an alchoholic who only came clean after joining a church, and my mother, who seeks redemption for a life of mistakes. I am an ordained minister and I still perform interfaith weddings, but I can't ever see myself becoming part of a church again.

It's led to a few interesting conversations, I've also performed more gay weddings then anything.

I do believe in God. I am not religious however, and would likely never consider it.
  • humbleadoge 12-12-2016, 05:18 PM
Honestly I Don't let it distract me from other issues in the world given the lack of evidence on both sidesresulting in a futile argument. Nonetheless from an aspect of community it is very beneficial for solving problemsj of the heart. Religion can be a plague to progress or it can be funding for the furure.

    You ever heard of Spinoza?
  • Noriko 02-01-2017, 11:12 PM
Nope. Seems like just another thing to argue about. If it makes you happy and you keep to yourself, go for it. I might be a happier person if I was a believer, but I honestly just can't believe any of it.

Used to until maybe 5 years ago, I grew up around lots of religous family and family-friends so it just seemed natural but eventually it became harder and harder to believe.

My Mum is hella Christian and I was raised that way. Now that I've got older, I don't believe it all from when I was a kid.

I'm semi-Atheist but not fully because I believe in God, but I don't believe it is God who controls things.

    mkay thanks

I think I'm in the same boat as you. It just seems unlikely we're the "most powerful life forms in the universe" and that other life forms can exist beyond our comprehension. Shit, their dimensional fabric could contain folded dimensions of dimensions or some crazy science like that.
We don't have a solid definition of "god" so who is to say that time jumping, self repairing, multi-dimensional being didn't just poop us here and leave?
  • Sathariel 06-01-2017, 07:54 PM
I believe in God as the source of everything. However I don't believe that God has a plan for everyone, or that God is controlling everything.

that sounds like a conflict between what "God" is and it's attributes, it's essence, and what It's supposed to be able of doing.
if the so called "god" you believe in, is not who controls things, then who does it? (if there is one) and,if there is... does "the one that controls things" control God itself?
if there isn't such a thing, as something that controls things, hence our freedom (capabilty of acting with no impediments) is absolute and irrevocable, which would lead us to think that we are little gods on our own...
I particularly like to state that I'm an agnostic, although I think there are rational reasons that may lead us to believe in if not "God" some kind of superior will, or undeniable "truth" behind us all.
    although I can't prove it, h3h3

Spinoza.... god "trapped" in material reality, being a substance that subsists on its own...
that's Materialism, or putting it aside, denial of freedom.
ka-ká, funny how Moeki resorted to relativism
no offense, but... if anyone's belief are true, and my belief is that yours is not... which one s the valid one?
    >Relativism doesn't sustain itself, Boom
    *drops mic while saying "dawg"*
