If hes patient then Cowboy Bebop, one of my favorite neo-noir/western shows and seems to be one of the staple gateways, steins gate is also a good gateway

Clannad. Just to see them cry their eyes out.

First impressions are what counts so Clannad is the way to go.

I think Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is probably the best one to show people who are new to anime even though it's pretty long.

Hmm, I would probably start them off with a show that's really enjoyable and depending on their preference if it's going to be a Subbed or Dubbed show.

If they would like a subbed, I would suggest them: No Game No Life or Tokyo Ghoul

If they prefer dubbed, either: Fullmetal Alchemist or Death Note

Something like that anyway. I just ask them some very 2 or 3 easy questions and base it off that.

the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, good animation, fairly good story, and good voice acting.

I think you should show them something they have an investment in. For example, if they like sports, show them something sports related... I mean how I got into anime was my love of cars, so naturally I watched Intial D.

Probably something like Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! or Azumanga Daioh.

But right after I'd force the person to watch Jigoku Shoujo, because Ai

Soul Eater was one of those shows that really had it all: Action, comedy, an impressive art direction; the works. There were plenty of moments where I found myself cheering on the three ensembles, and at least one scene that made my jaw plummet straight to the floor. If I personally had never gotten into anime, this would be the series I'd hope someone would show me.

What if they end up really liking it?

I'd show them one piece because one of these two things will happen:
1: They'll end up really liking it but they'll never get to the end of it so they'll be stuck there until they grow out of it and never watch anime again.
2: they don't like it and they won't watch any anime again.

+1 to FMA:B and Soul Eater. Good options, I think.

In reality, all he's doing is pushing the same buttons he always has, nothing has changed. The longer he spends here, the more invested he gets, the more he forgets which life is the real one.

it all depends on their taste. i started with serial experiments lain and it got me hooked, but it's not something for everyone. i'd probably suggest nhk ni youkoso or haruhi if i didn't know the person. i don't really talk to strangers in the first place though. :x

None. Nobody deserves to deal with this shit.
...Okay, maybe some Ghibli/Satoshi Kon. And if they're openminded/have a a good sense of humor, Kodocha. But, yeah. That's pretty much it.

Uhm how about we start them off slow, something like a movie? Anime isn't exactly the type of thing you just wanna
shove in peoples faces all of a sudden...

I usually ask them what they like.
Most of the time I end up recommending FMA: Brotherhood. Can't really go wrong there.
But if they are more of the romance type, why not clannad?

Had some friends who watched that. Every single one said it had them crying profusely; even the guys.

That's the great part about it.
Then there's that one guy who has no emotions.
I cried even after watching it multiple times.
