I don't really watch too much animu these days, but when I do, I always use either KissAnime's player for streaming, or MPC with the CCCP.

Sadly I'm running on a craptop, so I don't get to use any of the real high-fidelity effects; but it's still leagues ahead of VLC or even Windows Media Player.

mpv with a custom config on linux. Sometimes use svp with it too. More often for films.

I just use VLC since it's easy and I don't have to install codec packs.

I originally installed VLC to view WebMs before I knew you could just open them with a browser and kept it around to watch anime on. Recently decided to try out MPC after VLC finally hiccuped on me during an anime.

I use KCP which is just a modified MCP. I have it set as an external player in Kodi for my HTPC

Hate me but I use WMP because I actually like the pretty buttons at the bottom, and K-lite Mega (I know it includes MPC-HC BUT u.u)

EDIT:

I recently discovered that it's incredibly easy to convert MKVs into a format the PS3 can stream so I've been messing around with that lately. Anime looks pretty good on a big TV.

MPC-HC with the Smooth Video Project running at 60FPS. Save some specialized hardware, a good TV, or a short clip interpolated in Twixtor, nothing else comes close. :3

Code:
$ mpv {link to video}
into your terminal of choice. to stream a video directly through mpv, its really useful!

When all it takes is adding --profile=opengl-hq to mpv then you really should bother!

Any way to watch anime in 60 fps other than using SVP?

Use a TV that does frame interpolation. Or commission your favourite studio to produce their anime in 60fps, as opposed to 15 or whatever they normally use.

Hmmm, maybe I'll just shell out the money for SVP then. Some of the anime I watch I'd probably want to keep on the down low :P
I'd love for studios to start producing 60fps anime, though I've not heard of any that have attempted this before.

mplayer! i.e. the less useful, less intuitive and less supportive, horribly outdated and unsupported version of mpv but i still love it. at least it forces me to not be picky... and hey, i wrote my own script to make it support youtube streaming so i call that dedication~. >.>'

There is a free version, though you're stuck with only DirectShow-based players if you're using Windows. And wow, I didn't realise it got so expensive! (my name's in the credits :D).
Of course, if you use Linux, then it's all free.

I find it strange that despite some studios turning to 3D animation to produce their anime, they still render it at a super low frame rate, and it always just looks awful. Normally in anime, they put frames in where they're necessary, such as for large or sudden movements, and camera pans. But in 3D animated anime, they don't bother with that, and it looks like you're playing a video game on an underpowered PC.

Yeah, the reason I was looking for an alternative was due to how much it is. Though it is a lifetime license so no need to worry about subscribing or any of that. Unfortunately I use Windows, not Linux, so I guess I'm out of luck in that area.

Ah yeah I see what you mean. Like most of the CG feels like sluggish trash. I mean I'm not opposed to the idea of CG anime should it be implemented better, and I have enjoyed some CG series such as the Knights of Sidonia and Houseki no Kuni (personal favorite). Perhaps they're already too scrapped for expenses just creating the CG part to make it look better maybe?

mpv has fairly good "dumb" interpolation, but svp is far better in some scenes (mostly panning). You absolutely do get artifacts with svp though.
