The lack of people not reading Hinamatsuri is disturbing.
It's one of the best comedy mangos out there, and has solid characters that develop throughout the series. Sure the artwork may not be the best (sadly it's not endearingly bad like ONE's art), but the writing more than makes up for it.
Hell, I'm willing to say that the comedy is better than Cromartie High and Daily Lives of High School Boys. Where else will you find scenes where a daughter convinces her "adopted" yakuza father to take her to a cabaret club?

[Image: 68747470733a2f2f752e706f6d662e69732f7769...722e6a7067]

Or find a manga where its comedy comes from watching characters waste away from hunger, seeing the MC almost getting killed by his fellow yakuza, etc.?

Tl;dr Hinamtsuri needs more love

Only problem is that between Norway and the new scanlator this series doesn't get enough updates.

I actually finished the whole thing in one sitting this one time. It took about six hours, but it was easily one of the highlights of my summer, not to mention a damn fine read.

Yuretsuzukeru aka Keep On Vibrating by Jiro Matsumoto.
https://myanimelist.net/manga/1935/Yuretsuzukeru

Really strange stuff, but facsinating in its grotesquerie. Stuff like this is just up my alley because compared to anime it shows how much freedom doujin manga artists can have to make really strange, dark stories.

I've gotten into a few series over the past couple weeks.

First one is called Dr. Stone, which was recommended to me by BestGuyEver. It's about a small group of people working to revive civilization after all of humanity was petrified in stone two millennia ago. The characters themselves aren't exactly much more than a single quirk, this being a shounen after all, but the plot and art are good enough that it's never been a boring read for me. Not yet, anyway. Also, new volume every Wednesday.

Second one is a shoujo ai story called Yagete Kimi ni Naru. The writing and characterizations are nice but what really keeps me reading is the relationship between the two leads, just because of how odd it is. It's a slow boil, too, which I find comfy.

And lastly I finally decided to pick up Watamote, since I've been meaning to start that for a long time now. Good stuff.

DDT by Suehiro Maruo

The last by him I read was called Gichi Gichi-kun, which was a bit too light and playful for me given his expertise at dark, fucked up, and surreal stories. This one is absolutely his usual.

So is it the kinda story where bad people do bad things, or where good people do bad things because of their personal beliefs?

I'd say the former, but Maruo's stories are usually such a blur of surreal violence and sex that it's hard to tell with confidence. They tend to be very short and abstract.

He's one of my very favorite mangaka (I only like Shintaro Kago more), so I recommend his work if that sounds up your alley.

Interesting, thanks for the recs! Though personally I ain't a fan of those stories right now in my life. If I wanted to see terrible people doing terrible things to each other, I think I'd rather watch KonoSuba.

So I've stumbled upon a rather novel manga in the local bookstore. It's an isekai titled Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter, wherein the main character is an otome game enthusiast who's hit by a truck and wakes up in the world of her favorite dating sim.

Sounds kinda familiar, right? But there's a twist here. With unlimited choice at her fingertips, she decides she doesn't really care that much about the plethora of suitors available to her character, and instead wants to rebuild her father's crumbling, corrupt domain. What's more, she's actually the game's antagonist in this world, and she's already en route to be sent to a nunnery if the protagonist-character succeeds in her endeavors. She resolves to avoid that ending at all costs.

The story strikes a particular chord with me, as it seems to echo the summer-long writing project me and @LucianDreamer embarked on in summer of last year. Whereas that tale turned Kantai Collection into a depiction of war, this one flips the isekai genre on its head by depicting a main character that is rather dissatisfied or even appalled by the world around her. The moment that (literally) sold the book to me was a chapter towards the end of the first volume wherein the main character visits her new fief. There she finds the commonfolk live in decrepit hovels, and hears from the mayor that their only contact with the nobles is when the tax-collector swings by every month.

There's no laughter in this scene. None of that fantastic levity or sense of offhandedness you'd find in a typical shounen. Instead, the main character is depicted gritting her teeth in silent, bitter anger, before she forces a smile and carries on. Just as I've done in real life.

I'm sure you could probably swashbuckle this from KissManga or somethin', and I'd encourage that to get a feel for the book. But from where I'm standing, this one's definitely worth having on the shelf.

Onanie Master Kurosawa

3/4s amazing, 1/4th abysmal. I don't know how the writer could write an ending like that and how it hasn't made this manga's reputation worse. It's hard to know how to evaluate something with such a sharp divide in quality. Like a Roman statue with a Christian cross etched on its face.

Note: Posted this in the wrong thread before...

Been binge reading trough Bloom into You recently, a very nice yuri highschool romance that, I think, has recently gotten an anime adaption (that's how I became aware of it).

There is no unnecessary drama in this one, the characters are simply decent human beings who care about each other but are sometimes unsure how to communicate their feelings. The depiction of the main girl obviously falling in love with the other girl chapter by chapter, while not realizing it herself, is super satisfying to read and feels completely natural.

Just all in all a very sensually written romance story. The bits of insights and life advice sprinkled throughout make it even better.

10/10 I'm into yuri now.

I didn't know that got a show. I remember people on /u/ being pretty adamant that it would NEVER EVER get an anime adaptation. Guess I should get caught back up on it.

I never watched/read Kaiji the Gambler but I might have to, because I am reading Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa and it really is an incredible manga. The perfect mix of a very Japanese kind of humor (based around a kind of faux grandiosity) and some incredibly poignant, painfully honest tragedy of daily life. And it has some of the best reaction faces...
