Beats me. I feel like peoples time would be better spent looking at Google image results for "Garbage" and "Trash can" for 22 minutes than watching an episode of Retarded Hamster Sister.

Now let's be honest. The first half of the first season was good. Then it all went to shit, i picked it up being real hight right where i lefted off and bam... Plot keeps getting more bland and tasteless. It would have been fine if they ended it at episode 12 with "Ok, game's dangerous. Helmets confiscated, game banned. Kirito meets Asuna years later married, pregnant and completely forgot about a loser dude who only plays videogames. End."
I could never get behind the concept of SAO. I dont know if it was suspension of disbelief or what, but I couldnt 'get into' the whole universe or shake the initial 'so this is an anime about playing WoW' judgement. The second they said 'beater' at the end of the second episode I dropped it.

TBF, I think SAO could be interpreted as a deconstruction and partial reconstruction of extreme escapism. I've never seen it myself, but I know from friends and The Abridged Series that several of his newfound friends die within the first dozen or so episodes. But Kirito lives, and through his exploits he (presumably) not only liberates his fellow players from the confines of the game, but ends up with the girl of his dreams, met through the simulation.

That said though, I feel as if the overarching romance plot was the biggest disservice to SAO as a series. Yeah, I get it: Most people who're gonna watch this are virgin highschoolers who want nothing more than a badass MC and a cute chick to hook up with. But the concept itself is brimming with potential. Drop Asuna and Kirito, and you've got fertile grounds for examining if and how order arises from complete anarchy, how different people cope with life in a lawless and unforgiving world, and how people act online when nobody's looking. (On that note, I feel as if the baddie's enforcement that everyone look like their real selves was another great disservice to the concept of the show. To quote Oscar Wilde: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.")

But no. Instead what we got was a decent love story in a half-assed virtual world featuring two-bit characters aimed at appeasing horny teenagers. The act of wasting this much potential oughta be a crime.

Shoot man, I feel like I shoulda written a review. But then I'd hafta actually watch this drek. Sadly, wasting potential seems to be a bad habit of this author; I watched an adaptation of his previous series, Accel World, and it made me want to chuck the jewel case across the room for how just how little he actually did with the characters. In a similar vein though, I hear Log Horizon is leagues better, so I'd totes check that out if you're lookin' to scratch SAO's itch.

I think you are right about this, but I feel that the whole point of having this kind of commentary is defeated by the kind of demographic that SAO is appealing to. Its likely that the exact kinds of people that this series is talking about are also anime fans. Its a step above say, Jack Thompson creating a video game, but its still on the spectrum.

Eva did it the best I think because they pretty much directly challenged the kind of self-defeating attitude that leads people to continue seeking out new escapist fantasies. More importantly, It didnt opt for a reconstruction of the fantasy in the 'real-world' which still does not ultimately reflect the reality of the audience (ending up with the girl of your dreams at the end of the anime).

I feel like if you want to make a criticism of extreme forms of escapism in an anime, you really need to go all out for it to keep people from looking over your message and further indulging in that fantasy.

I was watching Kemono Friends.
How do you sell anime made on MMD and get away with it? Kemono Friends it's like the Fidget Spinner of anime, it's a low quality, cheap thing that everone seems to love.

Imagine if someone made some cheap machinimas of something like, I dunno, Halo and sold collections of episodes on blu-ray for full price and made a boatload of money off of that venture despite the episodes being free online. Wouldn't that just be ridiculous?

Also, if that's the Fidget Spinner of anime then what's the Emoji Movie of anime?

What I thought was an interesting concept with a heap of potential to delve into some real nitty gritty shit while also keeping me entertained and entranced by some fantasy elements

really ended up just being a bunch of boring, sad, and generic (not to mention the animation was wonky at some parts, extra ouch).

I expected nothing, and was still disappointed.

I mean shoot, at least Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan made the attempt to be be funny. Aldnoah.Zero might've had crap characters, but at least the action scenes were solid. Here though, nothing about this show seems genuine; from the writers to the artists to the executives themselves, it seems like everyone involved put in a half-ass job and called it a day, likely because that's precisely what happened.

Saving graces? Well, the concept's alright - guy who's obsessed with something he can't have gets the opportunity to become what he's always revered. The girls are cute, when they're not moving anyways. Funimation's VOs got paid, I suppose that's nice. And in the one scene that made me laugh, our MC started subconscously playing with his best friend's hair.

I just don't understand what the appeal is, man. Like, one of the cardinal rules of schadenfreude is that the target has to be deserving of the torment they recieve. This is why Kazuma and Aqua have such an entertaining dynamic in KonoSuba, bcause they're both equally-terrible people. But then you've got Umaru here who literally leeches off her brother because she's too lazy to do anything else.

It's not as if the show depicts what it's actually like being an unproductive member of society. Am I supposed to believe people identify with her?

That's a shame, I'd thought about giving that one a go since the premise was interesting to me.

Aand today we've got Heroic Age! A crappy 2007 sci-fi action anime I snatched on a whim offa my old ratio site. Angling itself as a an action-comedy/space opera loosely based off of Hellenic myth (specifically the Twelve Labors of Heracles), it's really just an incoherent and pointless mishmash of halfhearted ideas laid atop one of the worst stories I have ever seen. Seriously, I'd rather watch Akame ga Kill! than this shit again. No joke, the whole thing culminates in our protagonists giving our villains a portal to another dimension, which convinces them to stop trying to exterminate humanity (which they'd been doing for reasons unclear) and leave the universe in pursuit of the beings which created it. Legend of the Galactic Heroes, this shit ain't!

What really struck me is just how formulaic it got within the first couple episodes. Apparently, despite all the futuristic technologies and elite pilots at its disposal, the Argonaut's fuckin' useless; y'know why? Every single action scene for the first half of the series (which was as long as I stuck with it), can be summarized by the sequence of, "Argonaut and crew puts up a good fight against alien bugs -> Oh no, they're about to be overrun! -> No worries, that half-dressed kid with the power to transform into a giant biomechanical dragon just kicked everyone's ass!"; rinse and repeat, ad nauseum. And the music? Oh, don't even get me started on the fuckin' music. It's not so bad for quiet scenes, but during battles there seems to be a single score that plays in one particular order, and it just so happens to be that curious sort of piece that's both utterly forgettable yet incredibly irritating-to-listen-to all at once. It's like a tuba being played through a cheese-grater. Augh.

From a writing standpoint, I honestly think the biggest failing of this series was making the protagonist's primary adversaries giant alien bugs. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good bug-war, but it has to be executed with nuance. In Starship Troopers, if I recall, the use of inhuman bugs furthered the work's goal as a satire by serving as a metaphor for how imperialist propaganda paints its enemies as scary and incomprehensible. Here, it's just used willy-nilly to give the protagonists someone to fight that audiences won't feel sympathy for. It's a XEBEC series, so my expectations are somewhat tempered, but I was really expecting more from one of their sci-fi outings.

Saving graces? Well, the commander-chick they introduced halfway through the series has a nice rack, and and the show certainly has no shortage of slender babes in skintight outfits. This is nice. I like that, even though they look like they're about to be spaghettified by a supermassive black hole. Too bad it's such a slog to watch, or I mighta stomached it till the end.

Post Scriptum: As you can probably tell, I found myself in somewhat of a foul mood whilst recalling this show. Don't know why, but it felt good. Kinda felt like I was channeling the spirit of one of my favorite old game reviewers from the '06-'09 era of YouTube. Those were wonderful days. ^^

Don't even get me started on this piece of trash, I know it's been over half a decade since sword art online aired but the arc where Kirito tries to bang his sister will forever stand out to me. I find Suguha to be quite bland in terms of personality, and she isn't very aesthetically pleasing. This added up with the fact that she's basically lusting after Kirito's dick for half the season makes it completely messed up, she's his sister. I get that they kinda half assed it and turned her into his half sister because she was adopted or something, but I think my point is still clear, and it's maybe even stronger because clearly the writers didn't have the balls to go for full-on incest.
