I have tor, but never use it. I don't have a reason to use it.
It's easier not doing anything illegal than having to worry about it.

Thank you to all staff of lewd for keeping up with such an amazing site.

you don't have to be doing illegal things to use tor...
some people just don't want everyone watching everything they do

not sure where you live, but in the US we have the 4th amendment that SHOULD protect against the NSA programs but our government is too fucking inept and incapable to stop them

I use Tor all the time, It's pretty useful. And yeah Applebaum is a very nice guy, I wish I could come and listen to one of his talks one day :) Mostly use tor to sign up to sites and forums, simply because I don't trust them with my IP. I've been through sites being hacked and DBs leaked too many times. But occasionally I take a stroll down the darknet sites, there's some pretty useful stuff information there.

I think there's a little misconception with that statement, don't get me wrong but this just how I've understood this. The point behind Tor is not privacy, the main point is anonymity and bypass censorship (users in China or Iran for example). While the traffic may be encrypted and give you privacy by protecting your data, that will only work internally. Both the guard node and the exit node will be able to see the traffic you're sending, exception of course if you're using SSL/HTTPS, but that is not the case for all sites.

So privacy protects your data, and anonymity protects you. I usually use a VPN together with Tor if I have information I want to protect, either before Tor to give me more privacy or after Tor to give me more Anonymity. It depends on your values. Because I mostly assume that what I send to the clearnet with exit nodes will be under surveillance at some points, so at the times I don't bother with VPNs; it's usually because I have nothing of importance to hide. Sniffers on nodes are usually after the bigger fish based on what I've seen.

Here's an interesting article about this, one person conducted a study and found out that it is indeed the case that some nodes are actively or passively listening on traffic.

That is indeed an interesting article, I haven't read the whole thing but will do later on.

Oh, isn't that just the case w/ exit nodes? Also I'd like to add that Jacob himself said that there were few exit nodes that were possibly ran by the three letter agencie at some point for a short period of time. That's one of the reasons why I said "I'd also like to encourage people to run tor relays, because sharing is caring!
", the more people that run relays the harder it will be for the three letter or generally any intelligence agencie(s) to track Tor users.

P.S.
New Tor update /now/

Don't run any nodes yet, I used to run an internal node on my android for a while. But I plan to set up exit nodes soon on some vps machines :) (Want to get that Tor T-shirt haha). And interesting, it could probably be possible. Kind of spooky.

Im against nsa surveilence but technically, they are not violating any rights directly. They are sorta violating implied rights but its a murky fine line. So i agree with you but people gotta start making clearer arguments. Im am a active i2p and tor user myself.

THEY'RE TRASHING OUR RIGHTS, MAN
