This is a thing I want to try, and I think its something you all might enjoy. I'll be doing Weekly reviews of each anime I'm watching this season (which is pretty much all of it). For each show each week, I'll be doing a spoiler-free review, as well as a seperate spoiler and screenshot filled review. Also, when I release a new review each week, I'll be reading the replies to my last week thread, and editing it to give a more board consensus review. Therefore, if you're watching any of the shows I'm posting about, make sure to let me know what you thought about it, just be sure to put any spoilers into a spoiler tag. This will be a pre-season review, and since the first episodes have already been released last week, I'll try to get out both the first and second episode reviews for next week. If these are popular, I'd like to continue doing them for seasons to come, as well as doing reviews of older shows that I enjoyed.
I get all of my info about the shows from Anilist, and that's where I'm reading the synopses from in order to make this pre-season round of reviews. I'll try to use both the English and romaji names in all my titles, where they're available. I can also use the Japanese names if anyone wants them for some reason.
Before I start, I'd just like to say that I often enjoy a lot of shows that others really hate, and I haven't read any of the source material or other reviews for any of these shows, so if you see any unpopular opinions, that's just me being a wierdo. Also, being pre-season, there won't be any spoiler sections in this set of reviews, I don't know anything more than the synopsis after all.
Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon / Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai
Genres: Action, Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem, Military, School
This show could be really hit or miss. It has a really neat concept, kind of like a post-magic setting. From what I can tell, the story follows a guy who's part of a wizard killing army, and he can't use guns, which are the new main weapon. They're killing wizards because I guess the wizards still pose a threat to the gun-wielders. I'm assuming they stopped utilizing magic as the main weapon because only few could use it, whereas mostly anyone can use a gun. The main character is an exception, he can only use a sword. Because of this, he gets put onto the "35th Test Platoon" which is a platoon for poor students. That makes me think its a sort of feudal setting, which I guess works with the whole magic era thing. An "ultra-elite pistol master" joins the same platoon, and it sounds like the show will be chronicling the platoon's exploits as they hunt down wizards. From the look of the cover picture, this will be about a dude in a platoon full of cute girls, and they probably follow your usual "dere" tropes.
Now, I like a silly harem now and again, and this one has a neat enough idea that it could be pretty good. I don't think I'd bet on it being the next big hit though.
Beautiful Bones -Sakurako's Investigation / Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru
Now this one I'm kind of excited about. Its about a guy and his girlfriend getting "Involved in various incidents regarding bones." Now I'm not sure if that means they're going to be investigating the incidents (though this is my bet just because of the title), or if they're causing the incidents to be investigated. Either way, I think it'll be real good. The guy is really serious, but he like's to show off his girlfriend. She's an older girl from a rich family. They live in Asahikawa in Hokkaido, so I guess that's where they'll be involved in bone stuff. The cover picture is super pretty, which I hope means the show will look amazing. The studio producing it is TROYCA, but right now, I can't seem to remember ever hearing about that studio before. This show could be really cool, I really enjoy mystery and horror shows, so I'm thinking I'm going to love this one. I just really wonder what the heck an incident involving bones would entail, and why they're apparently really common in Hokkaido.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight / Rakudai Kishi no Eiyuutan
Genres: Action, Fantasy, Romance, School
Alright, so this is looking like it might be kind of similar to the Anti-magic academy show. Its about "Magic Knights" which I guess are just wizards who use weapons they make out of their souls. This reminds me of a show I liked from a few seasons ago called Bladedance of the Elementalers. The story is about a knight the other knights call a "Failed Knight." He has no magical skills, but he becomes challenged by a foreign princess who's the number one student in he school. The duel has a condition making the loser obedient to the other for life. Okay, so that bit is also really similar to something that happened in Bladedance of the Elementalers. If its like Bladedance, I'll probably enjoy it, I just really hope its not a cheap rip off.
Comet Lucifer (also the romaji title)
Genres: Adventure, Fantasy, Mecha
Oh boy, here's the mech show for the season... Wait a second, the synopsis doesn't even mention mechs. Looks like although the show is set in a world with mechs, it has nothing to do with them. The whole "its a world full of x but has nothing to do with x" thing isn't new, but it is something I like a lot when its done well. The story is about a guy who lives in a big mining town, on a planet full of powerful crystals. I'm guessing the crystals are used for either power or armour for the mechs, because otherwise I don't really see any connection between what I'm reading, and mechs. This guy runs around searching for rare crystals. He gets caught up in a riot of school children, and ends up at a lake near the ruins of an old mining site. He meets a girl with blue hair and red eyes (sounds like a qt.) The girl's eyes "gaze straight ahead" so either she has a weird eye problem, she's a life advisor, or they really wanted to save on animation costs. If its not the latter, this show looks kind of cool.
Dance with Devils
Genres: Demons, Romance, Shoujo, Supernatural
I'll be honest, this show looks like it might be "mostly likely to be dropped Fall 2015." Its a reverse harem, and just based on the picture it looks like it'll be similar to Diabolik Lovers (In fact, I could be dumb, and this is a sequel) which I hated so much, I dropped it after two episodes. The story is about a girl who went to a house full of demons, and is attracted to them. Yep, its probably going to be real similar. The description is really short, so its similarity to DL is all I really see. I think they used the same font and general layout of the picture, so I really think its a sequel of sorts. This one may not make it past episode 1 for me.
Genres: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi
Alright, so THIS is the mecha anime for the season. Its about "Objects," which are what I assume are the mechas for this show. They have specialized pilots, one of which is a girl described as odd. She meets a gay who wants to become a mechanic for the Objects. She also meets a soldier girl. My guess is that they group up and something tragic happens, leaving them stuck together fighting baddies with a mech, a foot soldier, and some guy with a fancy techno wrench and maybe a gun. Based on the picture, there's a third girl involved. It'll probably be a thinly veiled harem show, but I like military stuff, so it might be alright.
Hidan no Aria AA
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Hidan no Aria looks a little weird, and its probably going to be a fan service filled comedy. Its about a girl who really sucks at fighting as a “Butei.” The girl idolizes one of the elite fighters, and convinces her to give her some help to become better. From the picture, the Buteis are gun users, and they probably have some sort of magical powers. Honestly, I picked it up because I thought the blonde girl with the bow in the picture was a qt. This is also one of the few comedy shows this season, so I hope it lives up to that.
EDIT: I really can't find any way to get a subbed version of this show, and it looks like none of the big sub groups are taking it on. That's too bad, because it looked really fun.
K: Return of Kings
Genres: Action, Super power, Supernatural
Its going to be weird, but it looks like its also going to be a lot of fun. There are seven kings, each with a different power, and they share this power with their clansmen. The kings formed into four groups, Blue for order, red for chaos, reformed kings in green, and irregularities in white. Something or someone called “jungle” shows up and all the kings have to start fighting again for some reason. From what I can tell in the cover picture, there are like five girls max in this show. Now I don’t think its going to meet my quota for qts per capita, but I’ll give it a try. Its based in modern japan, and I guess these kings showed up just because of that jungle thing because it mentions that “history has strangely overlapped with reality.” I guess the kings figured the JIDF just couldn’t handle it, and they needed to come to the future wielding swords instead. It appears that the blue kings are more organized, they mostly wear the same uniform, and the red and others are just sort of wearing street clothes. I read a synopsis with the spoilers edited out, so I’m probably missing something crucial here, but the premise of this show is a bit odd. Regardless, there’s probably going to be a few fight scenes, so I’ll watch it anyways.
EDIT: I've been informed that this is actually part of a rather large series. I won't be continuing it in this review, but I may watch it and give it a review at a later date.
Lance N’ Masques
I think this is going to be more of a “pure” fantasy than some of the other stuff this season, and that’s good. The only genre I like more than fantasy is space fantasy, but that slot is already filled. This story is about a guy who’s the descendant of some knights, and he’s had the knight’s code of chivalry forced on him since birth. He wears a mask, and is known as “Knight lancer.” He ends up saving a girl on one of his outings, and he learns that she lives mostly alone in an estate owned by her rich parents. The knight and his friends decide to disguise themselves and move in with her. I have no idea why that’s the response to learning a random girl is bored at home. However, this show looks like its got plenty of qts, so I’m interested. Also this guy’s sword is ridiculously large, so that’s probably how he gets all the girls.
Ore ga Ojou-sama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets-Sareta Ken (Please Japan, shorten these things)
Genres: Comedy, Ecchi, Harem, Romance, School
This show is going to be absolutely prime. Its about a guy who is invited to an all girls school where none of the girls have seen the outside world. They decided to do this because the graduates were having problems fitting in the real world. The guy they picked was chosen based on being completely average. The catch though, is the school leaders think he’s a homosexual with a muscle fetish. He learns that the alternative is castration, to protect the girls’ purity, so he just decides to go with it. This will be pure gold if they can manage to make it not stupid. The school outfits are a work of art, and there’s an adorable girl with white hair and blue eyes. How can you beat that? This is going to be one of those shows with absolutely no story, I assume. That’s fine with me though, I’m getting plenty of qts as compensation.
Seraph of the End: Battle in Nagoya
Genres: Drame, Shounen, Supernatural, Vampire
Okay, I lied, there will be spoilers in the pre-season reviews, because this is a season 2, and thus the backstory is going to be spoilers for the first season. However, I highly recommend watching the first season of this if you haven’t, its really good and super pretty. Also pink hair is best hair.
The story is set in a world where a weird disease turned everyone who was adult at the time into a vampire, and the vampires enslaved all the children they could in order to drink their blood. This follows a boy who escaped the vampires, ad went to fight with the resistance, but had to leave his best friends behind while doing so. His best friend becomes favoured by the vampires, and is turned into one. Neither of them know what happened to the other, and they both want to try to save each other. The boy who got away joins the army, and gets a powerful demon weapon, the only weapons that can fight the vampires. The last season ended right after the two boys met on the battle field, and a secret was revealed. The boy who had gotten away had been made a test subject of the humans. They gave him pills that allowed him to be taken over by a demon, and become extremely powerful at the cost of his own consciousness. He accidentally triggers this while fighting vampires, and best girl becomes worried about him. This season is right after this, and is about fighting more vampires. The description doesn’t really tell me more than that. I am very excite about this, I loved the first season.
Genres: Music, School, Shoujo, Slice of Life
This show is totally Yaoi. The story is about a guy who goes to music school, and tries to join a group of the guys with the highest grades. He joins a class taught by this group, and one of the members notices him, and he piques his interest. I’m assuming this is going to be a bit like free, where it’s a bunch of dudes, and its not really about romance, but its totally about romance. I have skipped shows like this in the past, but I think I’ll give his one a chance. Maybe it’ll be like a yoai K-ON. The picture indicates that there are no grills in this show, but the blonde guy is kind of a qt.
The Perfect Insider / Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider
Genres: Drama, Mystery, Seinen
More Mystery? Yes Please. This show is about a guy who works in the Saikawa Research Lab. He goes on a vacation held by the lab, with the daughter of his mentor (she’s a real qt.) While on vacation, they find a corpse. The two decide to work together to solve what turns out to be a serial murder case. Oh man, two investigative shows in one season? I’m hyped. This looks like its going to have some trippy visuals, monogatari style, and I’m good with that. A-1 studio is making it, so it’ll probably be of pretty good quality. My only worry is that it seems really similar to Beautiful bones, being about a guy and lady investigating murders. I just hope they’re distinct enough to both be worth watching.
The Testament of Sister New Devil Burst
Genres: Action, Ecchi, Fantasy, Romance, Shounen
Another Season two. If you like cute grills, specifically lolis, and fighting, the first season is for you.
This show is about a guy who turns out to be a hero that was outcast for killing other heroes accidentally. He ends up living with two demons, one of which is an adorable loli succubus. He becomes linked to the other girl, a demon mage of sorts, so he knows where she is and can protect her. Being a link created by a succubus however, the link runs a little deeper, if you know what I mean. The girl is always being hunted by other demons for her power, and isn’t strong enough on her own to protect herself. The story of the first season ends after an attempted kidnapping was foiled by the main character. I’m happy this is getting a season two, because I really didn’t expect it to based on season one. It was funny and all, but all the romance seemed a bit to forced. I was really just watching for the loli by the end. Hopefully, this season can get me excited about this series again.
The Asterisk War / Gakusen Toshi Asterisk
Genres: Action, Ecchi, Fantasy, School, Sci-Fi, Shounen
The Asterisk War is set in the future, after “Invertia,” a meteor storm which proved a massive disaster. With the meteor, however, came an unknown element called mana. This allowed for massive strides in technology. I guess they found a way to use the mana to make a whole new species of human, who can use special powers. These “Genestella” go to a special academy city floating above some body of water. The city is surrounded by six academies, which I would think each teach a specific school of magic, and post warriors to fight in the festival in the city. This sounds like a sort of Cross-Ange sort of deal, where a new source of immense power was found, giving people magical powers. It turned out to be really dark in Cross-Ange, but I think this one is probably a bit more innocent. The story follows someone who goes to one of the schools around the city. He’s most likely either extremely strong, or will become extremely strong. Plenty of extremely cute grills in the cover picture, and if it any indication of the animation style, this will be extremely pretty.
Genres: Mystery, Supernatural
This one’s another new season of an existing show, but because its monogatari, I don’t really need to spoil the earlier seasons to explain it. However, the synopsis means nothing to me as I haven’t gotten to reading the novels yet. This show is essentially just about the main character solving mysteries and fighting baddies. It’s a tonne of fun, and there’s a lot a great characters. If you haven’t seen any of this series, I highly recommend it, its my favourite series of all time. It is extremely well animated, and every scene could be considered an art piece. Also I’m a sucker for little sisters. I cheated a bit, so I’ve already watched two episodes of this as I’m writing the review. I was way too excited for this to wait. They’re really good.
There we go, that’s what I’ll be watching his season. I didn’t include World Trigger, even though I will be watching it, just because its not really a new season, just continuing the first one. Overall, I’m pretty excited for this season. I don’t see anything taking AOTY though, I think Charlotte is probably going to win that one. Except maybe Monogatari, but I don’t really consider it when I think AOTY because they release one every year at least, and I’d always pick it. I realize I said I’m excited for pretty much every show this season, I’m just really excited about everything every season.
But seriously, is Dance with Devils a sequel of Diabolik Lovers? I’d prefer to drop it before watching any of it if that’s the case.
This is something I haven’t really done before, so please let me know what you think. I really enjoy doing it, and if you guys like it I’d love to keep writing these. As I said, I’ll be reading the comments, and when I post the next set of reviews I’ll be adding edits to my reviews to reflect a more board broad opinion. Just as a reminder, please keep spoilers in spoiler tags, especially in the case of the season 2 shows. Also, if I made any spelling or grammar errors that I didn’t catch, don’t be afraid to let me know, I’ll love you for saving me the embarrassment.
