What is it?

Online - The Comic is a psychological-horror series by Keropyon and Kyoka Tsukasa. It is adapted from the popular light novel series of the same name.

What's it about?

"Mai Yashiro (22) was an average office worker until the day a video game console arrived in her mailbox.

The game she is forced to play, “Nightmare,” is a dangerous game in which one risks both the lives of the ones they love and their own body!! If you refuse to play, those dear to you die. If you lose battles in the game, parts of your body (your arms or legs, your voice, etc.) cease functioning.

The horror of this game spreads throughout society in a flash, and, to fight it, Mai’s company creates a “Nightmare” Strategy Team. After being assigned to this team, Mai and her dependable comrades boldly rise up against this hellish game. "

Where can I read it?

Batoto as usual, or if you prefer scrolling down a single page for all pages of the comic per chapter, kissmanga is one I've been using recently.

Why do you recommend it?

I was browsing around for a few different horror manga to read, when this popped up. Although the premise doesn't seem like anything original (an RPG game where losing = death, or worse), the thought and actual gameplay within the manga is very well written and deeply thought-out. It's hard to write this without doing any spoilers, but I found myself already connected and emotionally attached to the MC and her enemy-turned-friend (when you meet her, hngggg). The MC is much more intelligent than I thought her out to be, both as a gamer and as a tactician seen in the first battle.

The artstyle is also pretty interesting. Many places tag it as a shounen, while the art itself feels very reminiscent of a shoujo-type. Don't let this be offputting though - it'll make the actual dramatic and gritty scenes much more appealing.

It's not groundbreaking, but it's definitely interesting and a worthwhile read. I'll be keeping my eye on it, and you should, too.
