Ok so i dont mean to make it sound that all anime is in japanese but.. to the anime fanatics how much of other languages have you learned by just watching anime? Or am I just assuming and everyone just sticks to the subs?

You can't really learn the language just by watching anime. You can pick up certain words or phrases but attempting to learn the language as a whole through just anime would be ridiculously inefficient if not impossible to a certain degree.

Learning the language through another source then testing your knowledge through watching anime without subs could be viable though.

It will be really difficult to learn Japanese through anime, why?
1. You don't get an understanding of how Japanese sentence structure works, nor would you understand reading or writing Japanese.
2. Yes you can understand some basic words like, "Hello", "goodmorning", etc. but you won't learn far more advanced words or even how to use them in a sentence.
3. Take it from someone who's studied Japanese for three years, I recommend taking a class to learn or even self-teach yourself through methods online :)

Hahaha I though i would forever always be the one to need subs. Then again I love the animes but never wanted to learn the languages. But I dont like watching dubbed animes it kind of throws me off hearing a different voice from the original.

I used to study Japanese with a book I bought from a second hand store long time ago. It had some cassettes (that's how old it was) that I would listen to while sleeping every night, and that helped me with knowing some Japanese when I watched anime, but I could never say I could learn the actual Japanese language by watching it. I watch with subtitles anyways. But you can definitely pick up a few words, and even learn how to make a few sentences because of Anime.

Hahaha well I am not one of the people who can learn language while watching anime. Probably because I never really wanted to but just rely on subs. I can still enjoy watching. As long as it is not dubbed. I cant appreciate anime being dubbed its just weird for me.

I took japanese for a couple of years in highschool, so if anything it just refreshes my memory on it, rather than learning it solely from anime

@Mac would you say watching anime without having to use the subs is better way of watching or is it just the same? Is there any difference?

Anime/media in general is good for practice but if you're trying to learn something it's best to take a course or some shit

If you know Korean, you can learn Japanese by hearing as long as you pay attention. Their grammar structures are 90% same.

Well, Kanji is a bit of problem since Koreans don't use Hanja much in everyday purposes.

I still look at the subs instinctively, but i suppose it would just make it less effort?
As in you wouldn't need to focus so hard on reading, you can tab out and still understand whats happening etc

This user knows whats up, Japanese is too complex for such learning, I did learn Italian and actually living in Italy undefined and English mainly from the TV shows, but Japanese is simply too complex just for beeing an Altaic and Sillable language it'svery diffficult.
I was advantaged in English and Italian because I am Romanian undefined and Romanian is a latin language but before the Roman Invasion it was a germanic one therefore it has a mix of both grammar rules easing learning things like French Spanish or German.
But There are very diverse languages out there that follow very differnet rules like Icelandic, Hungarian and unfortunatelly Japanese is among them not so easy to learn from my perspective....
