so, hi. there are several threads here about tor and internet anonymity but i have not yet seen a mention of i2p, so i thought i'd start a thread.

if you don't know what i2p is, you can use it to access eepsites (which work somewhat like hidden services on tor). it has some similarities to tor, but while it doesn't enable you to browse the surface net anonymously like tor does, it is essentially an anonymous network layer, meaning you can also use it for irc, bittorrent/file sharing within the i2p network, p2p, etc.

so, i was wondering if anyone else used it. it's pretty new and less popular than tor, but there's some neat stuff on it; hiddenbooru comes to mind.

Just checked out and installed out i2p, looks cool. irc2p seems very laggy but i guess that's because of the mutliple hops?

yes. it's also still pretty new, and not as big as tor, so a lot of sites aren't available some of the time. on the other hand, it sometimes feels more like a community than tor because of that.

i have never actually tried irc because i'm scared of people being mean. *blush*

Wikipedia says i2p was created in 2003

Sounds interesting, I might take a look at it, since I'm really bored right now.
Thanks Moeki.

I2P was released a year after TOR. It is over 10 years old :P I2P is cool to mess around with, but I trust TOR so much more.

Yuss, I use it from time to time but I personally prefer Tor, however I find it funny when people from i2p, freenet and Tor get into an argument over which network is more secure and which network has the most pedos. it's freenet Also if you're interested you can check out The Eternal Archive Project

AFAIK i2p and tor have different purposes. Tor is for getting onto the internet in a private and secure manner, i2p is creating a totally seperate network from the internet. Doesn't seem to be any competition to me, they should work together as complimentary solutions.

I mostly use Tor, it's been quite a while since I played around with I2P. But I used to lurk sometimes around, now that you mention it I'm going to download it and start lurking again. They have interesting websites. Related question, does anyone know any services that offers hosting on I2P?

i looked into that; there's chen hosting which seems to have both tor and i2p but it's not free and i'm not sure if it's safe. (there's a neko girl but that probably shouldn't say anything.) i hope someone has a better option. <3

It seems like a good option but the bandwidth is kind of expensive. I think I'll stick with my own server in such case. I know how Tor hidden service works, quite a lot of documentation on that. I will probably have to read up more on I2P, I don't think I've seen many guides on hidden services with I2P.

First of all, you can access normal websites through i2p, it's just very slow. Also, unlike Tor, i2p does not attempt to do anything about browser fingerprinting. This is why Tor uses it's own edited version of Firefox with specific plugins, already preconfigured, same resolution for each session, etc. I2p is used with your own browser, so anything specific to that browser can be seen, making it easy to tell you apart, even if your ip address is hidden. This is why I can't recommend i2p at all.

See https://panopticlick.eff.org/ and https://www.browserleaks.com/

However, i2p could be theoretically better than Tor, so if the fingerprinting problem gets fixed I'll be all over it.

i know what you mean, personally i run tor and i2p in luakit, i've never used the tor browser. while you are right that this could make you easier to identify, it's very easy to work around that i.e. change your user agent string and stop accepting cookies, javascript, etc. changing the circuits/exit node ('changing your identity') can be achieved with telnet localhost and signal newnym. so while i agree that it makes it more difficult, it is not impossible to solve this problem. <3
