tl;dr: Don't use mods until someone murders the Rockstar CEO.

If you've been on /v/ or reddit for the past day or so you might have seen people complaining about being banned from GTA Online for using FOV mods, that help with motion sickness, and others. I personally think this is a retarded move from Rockstar's side. The only reason I even have the amount of hours I do in GTA IV is because of the mods for it. If you look at the community page that is actually the only thing keeping it alive this long. Ever since San Andreas mods have had a huge part in the Grand Theft Auto Series, with mods like SAMP and HD Textures. I sincerely hope someone goes allahu akbar all over the rockstar offices and runs of with the source code for the game, then leaks it online so people don't have to deal with Rockstars hate of the PC community. Not only is their game broken as shit, but they've spent over 3 years porting it to PC, and this is what we get?

Well fuck. I'm glad I didn't preorder this game. Way to fuck with your fanbase Rockstar. Way to go.

I personally think it's fair to ban for mods that affect someone else's online experience.

The main reason most people would usually buy GTA is for either:
1. 60 FPS
2. Mods.

Without mods, according to Rockstar's b& streak, the only thing left is to enjoy your super HD gameplay, which gets old after a while since you can't go online without getting slammed.

Then again, you can always do Story mode over and over again.

They should release the source of their servers or something. So that modders can setup their own modded servers.

This is Rockstar we are talking about. They have been very anti-PC as of late, and want to controll everything. The way the online is set up right now makes it so your stats and money are saved to the server so that you always have them no matter what "session" you are on. It's basically like World of Warcraft with guns minus dedicated servers. There are a few community projects working on trying to get unofficial servers working, though if they succeed they would break the TOS, and its very likely that Rockstar will strike down on it.

The funny thing is that the GTA community manager even featured GTA IV mods on his blog, but now acts as if they are the work of ISIS.

Honestly, I can only think that Rockstar itself is to blame that people are trying to get up unofficial servers, but then again, even if mods were (begrudgingly) allowed, there might still be that off chance that someone would do it.

I had high hopes for the PC port, but apparently even that's gone mostly to shit. In terms of console, I can't even bother with Heists anymore due to the lack of people joining/staying for Setups. Much of the DLC that's been thrown out costs way too much IG money that I have to obtain through lengthy glitches or repetitive missions.

At this point I'm about ready to just give up on the whole thing and sell my game.

Are they banning people because absolutely fucking 1337 haxxors have been ruining games for everyone or just because they hate PC users?

Well, if they actually invested in a proper anti cheat solution and run critical things like how much money a car costs and set off a flag when someone walks 400km/h, then this wouldn't be a problem to begin with. But, no. Of course rockstar can't do that, because what better way is there to detect cheaters than verifying all the fucking game files and make sure they've been left unchanged in order to just ban everyone and put them on a viritual version of a sex offender list they call the "bad sport pool" or whatever.

Well, I wouldn't exactly say this is only happening on the PC, but it's a lot harder to mod a console game.

Spoiler

ignore that kotaku tagged the article as PC for some reason, the article was written well before the PC release.

Why would that be the only reason you'd want to buy the game?

There's an easy way to cheat money and it also look legit on rockstars side. Although I only got 5m to test as I've found every game I hack/cheat in gets really boring and I want to keep GTA fun as I haven't got anymore games to play. Still enjoying GTA though :D

Eh. I would've kept going, because it's annoying what one has to do to get money these days in GTA.

I haven't finished them all either (mostly due to many people's choice not to join the Setups, which is really stupid). And I don't really speed run missions, I just attract the police and massacre a whole bunch of them before finishing the objective. I dunno why, but that really helps out with the whole reward thing.

It's been a while since I last played, so I'm not sure. Hm, maybe it's only a little boost. I'll check it out at some point when I'm not busy with procrastinating.
