What's your feelings toward the upcoming live action version of the Ghost in the Shell movie?

I only watch one or two movies per year, this is likely to be one of them. If they fail this one I can assure you I won't be giving Hollywood any more of my money for a long time.

I've never been a big fan of Ghost in the Shell, and this new movie doesn't look as good as the original, which I thought was an average film at best. I think I'll save my money and buy the new release of Innocence.

I thought the original was pretty good, but the subject matter has been so overdone and done better which sorta makes it look worse relative to modern standards. It's still a cool movie but the new version of it seems more action-oriented which could turn out for better or for worse in my eyes at least.

I've really been pretty ambivalent towards it since it was first announced. Them going through all the trouble of arguing about how "the Major's" ethnicity does not actually matter in defense of Scarlet Johansen being cast makes me think that they don't have a whole lot of faith of the movie doing well on its own so they put someone famous in the lead and hope for the best. As far as 3DPD adaptations go, it can't possibly be worse than the Death Note that's in the works.

The only thing I hope is that they do not butcher the story. As far as ascetics go i do not mind changes since this is a different medium. The last thing they could mess up is setting.

I fear that they'll end up accomodating way too much stuff into murrican taste (Thing that'll probably happen) and since they dared to pass the original before the adaptation in many countries, they're either too sure of their product or flat out stupid.

I'll probably snatch it on BD once it's out. Also the Steve Aoki remix is laughable at best.

looks pretty good so far to me . I have always been excited for the Gits franchise and from what i have seen in the trailers i must admit im intrigued. Will it be as good as the 1995 film (which i happen to love because its a classic and its very well done ) that remains to be seen.

I think they got the overall look down pretty well, but the dialog in the commercials sounds so lame! I have to admit though, I don't know about anything related to GiTS older than S.A.C, so if this is how Major actually is, than I would never know.

In the manga the major and everyone else is more lighthearted when they are not in action. And I have to disagree with you on the looks of things especially the city. The city looks like it belongs in blade runner not GiTS, but if you wanted a more cyberpunk feel then the movie is giving you what you want.

Now that I remember, GiTS world was more grounded in reality than this movie. But it looks okay as a generic cyberpunk setting.

I'm actually glad they amped up the cyberpunk aesthetics, just because I'm a sucker for it. I just hope it doesn't negatively affects the story, but I doubt it will.

i do not think the setting will affect the story but i think the story is going to be fucked regardless

I'm a bit peeved at Scarlett, but I shouldn't be surprised at this point

I watched the movie, it was actually my the first GitS thing I've seen. The general feeling I got is that it was just another generic American action movie. The plot was predictable and unnecessarily "deep". There was even the standard "humanity will strive on, teamwork is important" moral at the end.

After watching it, I started reading the manga. The feeling is completely different - the setting is more light-hearted, the characters crack jokes all the time, etc. The movie feels like yet another action sci-fun movie, but with cyberpunk mixed in. The only thing it has in common with Ghost in the Shell is characters and the title. Everything else is cyberpunk in general, but being cyberpunk doesn't automatically make something part of GitS.

it's gotten like this

yeah it is kind of sad they could have made the same movie with buying the rights to GitS. but instead they wanted to use a brand because they knew fanatics would see it

it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it still was far from living up to the original GitS' standard. as it was expected, they purged almost all the philosophical framework within which GiTS develops its plot and its meditations on the nature of consciousness, cartesian dualism and what constitutes personal identity in a cybernetic world, and they replaced it with the vacouous hollywood moral dichotomy of the "bad goys vs good goys" where the supposed goodness always triumphs. I really have grown weary of this kind manichaean mindset they keep shoving down everyone's throat where everyone is either good or bad and there are no nuances in between. (tl;dr: hollywood should be abolished)

They should all go on a long walk off a short pier instead.
