I'm just curious of your guys' experiences at anime conventions, if you have had any.

I'm considering going to Youmacon this year just for the sake of experiencing it, good or bad.

I've only ever been to one convention (a few times admittedly), every time I went I found it a waste of time and money.

I found that it catered for the people that were interested in mainstream anime (Naruto, Bleach, etc.) and didn't really have much of a fun time.

This is the convention I went to.

Hmm. That's a bummer. How large of a convention was it, if you know?

Maybe I can get a few more opinions first though. I'd assume not all conventions necessarily share that trait.

I'd really only be going for the rave, ball and cosplay type deal. It's not like I'm into super indy anime regardless.

It's not extremely large, but it's pretty big for something that's held in Adelaide.

I'd like to think so.

That's pretty much all I go to conventions for.

Yeh. I believe that Youma is like ranked 11 for the largest convention, so I assume it'd be a rather big deal.

So far, I haven't really found any panels that I'd be interested in, so yeah.

How entertaining was seeing all of the cosplayers? What events did you attend?

Also, I'm sure it helps that I live like 30 minutes away from a major convention. I don't have to worry about plane tickets, hotels, major meals, etc, which makes the entire thing seem a bit more attractive.

I've gone to a few, but they've never been too fun and I rarely buy from them.

I have been to a few different conventions.  I have seen varying degrees of quality in them.  I was JUST at AX2015 on July 3rd and it was awesome!  It wasn't just mainstream appeal, they had all sorts of offshoots.  I have went nearly every year since they began and the only real issues I have run into is lack of organization.  I have had years where the lines to pick up your badge took 2+ hours to get through.  This year, they seemed to have pretty much nailed it though.

At smaller cons, you get the feeling that you're at someone's birthday party or something, and it can be very awkward. To be with a bunch of other anime obsessed folks in a group that is large enough to stand out, but too small to matter is an icky feeling.  I've also seen these "indie" cons grow into major events and be awesome, so they are not necessarily bad.

All in all, treat it like a baseball game:  Bring lots of money, expect large crowds, try not to get into arguments.

? This thread was made very recently, so you don't have to worry about necroposting unless the last reply was, like, a few weeks to a month ago. :)

Also this might just be my lack of knowledge about conventions, but this seems to be a lot different than any I've everrr.. watched?

It is an insanely large convention with the entire thing spanned over 100k square feet. There is an incredible amount of people there too.(not too much to where its uncomfortable though)

I read in the comments that it's this fun because it's in Canada, and that most American conventions are run by strict people. Man, I wish I could've grown up there instead.

Been to Supercon. Was generally slapdash and shit. The only good part was the /tg/ room and the MtG room. The invasion of the Homestucks made traveling through the halls impossible too.

5/10.

No idea what American conventions you've been to because it's just short of a Free-for-All around here.

That looks like a pretty nice convention, far different to what we have here.

i felt very uncomfortable there, and they weren't my type of people. I couldn't bring myself to talk to any of them and i wasn't too interested in the merchandise at all. Some of it was cool. There were a few cool cosplays. There were a few big youtubers i didn't care about there. It just wasn't my atmosphere. lame stuff. Also they were having a Smash 4 tourney. AN 8 PLAYER SMASH TOURNEY... like wtf lmao

Ah, fair enough. You pretty much described how I feel about the convention that I go to.

I don't think @mentions work very well, since I never saw this.

I actually haven't been to any conventions so sorry if I'm wrong in any way ^^;

Mentions don't actually do anything at the moment, other than provide a link to the person's profile. I'll try to remember to make them do something when I wake up.
