Got into this oldish manga a few weeks ago, and I have to admit, I'm fairly impressed. It's an offshoot story of the Dragon Quest games, with sort of the same general plot - oh man, there's another demon god thing trying to take over the world - but it focuses on Dai, a short little teen who's destined to become the hero of humanity. It's pretty heavy on combat, and feels a lot like Dragonball Z in a lot of respects, but it occasionally raises race-related issues that keep me interested in the writing. The characters are pretty neat, too, and unlike Dragonball the 'normal' humans don't seem to lose pace as combatants.

Anyone else tried Dai no Daiboken? Wouldn't blame you if you've never heard of it, it's pretty old. Still, worth reading if you like semi-simplistic, battle-heavy shonen.

I was always interested in it. I hear the ending leaves a bit to be desired though, but that it's good nonetheless. The artist was a pretty good Toriyama impersonator.

Being a big player of the games, especially on ps2, I hated the manga and how different the story was from the games.

Didn't even know this existed despite being a fan of the DQ games.

I'll check it out.

It doesn't strike me as that different. It's a bunch of heroes struggling to save the world against an epic demon lord-type evil guy. Virtually every Dragon Quest game follows that format in one way or another. Now, if you're arguing that the way it's told (everyone has crazy supernatural powers rather than being more standard fantasy combatants) then I can see where you're coming from.
